@BakerBee: I remember the cow sign and actually thought it was cute...for the right office environment ;).

Also, do you have a chair you can put in front of the door? Mine opens inward, so I put that in as extra protection (though no one ever attempted it). I taped my sign over the doorknob, so there was no excuse!

Can you get the lock fixed? I don't know what the culture is like at your company, but if it were me I would just tell HR that I need a functioning lock and explain why. I bet they would fix it pretty quickly!

I work in a very casual office, and I have a window on my door. So, before I left on maternity leave I asked for a shade and a lock to be installed on the door. Now everyone knows what it means when my shade is down. But I have been tempted to put a tie on the doorknob too

And my boss suggested that I make a sign with a cow. So that should tell you what kind of office environment I work in!

I would also suggest putting the sign up when you pump, then take it down when you are done. I know people aren't paying attention to the time when they come to look for someone. If it is always up, they will probably take it for granted and pop in without looking at the time.

If it was me, I would put

"Trust me, you don't want to come in here. Come back in 20 minutes or send me an email."

I'd just put up a sign that said Meeting In Progress, please do not disturb. Or something like that. Are people really going to barge into your office if the door is closed?! I just can't imagine doing that without knocking first. Even when I know an office is unoccupied here, if the door is closed I still knock just to be on the 100% safe side!

I just used a "Please Do Not Disturb" sign. I wouldn't put the times or how long you think you'll be, because inevitably you'll get stuck in a meeting and won't be able to pump until 10 or one day pumping will take 30 minutes instead of 10 for whatever reason.

I didn't have a lock on my door so I used one of those wedge door stoppers. I'm sure if someone pushed hard enough they could have opened the door but it would have given me time to yell something at them.

Yes I would just put it up when you are actually pumping because people are not going to be checking their watches before they come to talk to you.

Unfortunately one guy still barged in - WTF??

I put a sticky note on my door that said "Available by phone or email." Worked well for the most part; after a few weeks everyone knew what that meant.

I did have my VP (woman) try to walk in, but luckily my door lock does work. I would definitely ask about getting the lock fixed.
