For anyone who formula fed from the beginning, when did your LO switch to 4 ounce bottles? DS is only 2.5 weeks old, but he's been taking 4 ounce bottles for almost a week now! Holy cow, this seems like so much!

Our baby is an eater! She is a month old and takes 3-4 oz every 2-3 hours. We use Earth's Best organic. What do you use?

Wow, Jack Jacks is a good eater, too! Right now, DS will take 4 oz and then sleep for 3-4 hours before taking another bottle. He's almost exactly a month younger than Jack Jack, so I guess that's not too far off.
We're using Enfamil Soy.

We started with Enfamil newborn and she did fine on it, but we thought we'd try an organic product and she seems to be doing ok on it. Compared to LJ, she'll take whatever is offered to her: MAM bottle, Dr. Browns, Avent, a binky... anything! It's kind of freeing to not be tied down to on-demand breastfeeding this time around... especially with no maternity leave!

I'm no help, but wanted to say how impressed I am with baby H! I also wish I were in your shoes, I'm so over BFing and weaning isn't working.

@Mrs. Jacks - I bet! It's a whole new ballgame, formula feeding from day 1; we didn't start with DD until she was 2+ weeks old.
I wonder if #2 is always a little easier going than #1? DS has been so easy so far!

@ Boogs - Ah, I'm sorry the weaning isn't going so well. I honestly don't know how you mommies do it! I'm so impressed with your commitment to breastfeeding, despite all the challenges that come with it!

@Honeybee: I don't think it's always the case, which is why I'm afraid for #2. My sister's 2nd baby was a bad sleeper, had reflux, colic, poor thing suffered a lot with him.

@Honeybee: #2 is sooo easy! Sometimes I wonder if it is because we learned so much the first time around (and I thought Lala was pretty easy) or if it's because it would have been very protective for this baby to be easy in her first family (evolutionary advantage to being an easy baby in a stressed environment).

And I want to hear more about Baby H. Do you think it's a difference between boy and girl or not so much yet?
pomelo / 5178 posts
@ Boogs and Mrs. Jacks - I was so worried that #2 would be difficult, especially since everyone was telling me how you only get one good one... and A was such a good baby. In some ways, I think the difference is my reactions; I'm so much less anxious and worried this time around, and that's made it a ton different. In other ways, I think it was some parenting decisions that really contributed to it (formula feeding, different sleep routines, and a lot better sharing of responsibility between mom and dad :). I'm not sure if sex plays a point right now; H is sooooooo sweet and cuddly, just like his sister was. I think we might see sex play a bigger role as he gets older!

@Honeybee: I would love to hear more about the choice to formula feed and your different sleep routines. At this point I'm considering not breast feeding next time or for only a short period and I know we need a better sleep routine next time.

@ Boogs - I don't know if you remember, but I ended up quitting breastfeeding with A because of a really bad case of mastitis and a few days in the hospital when she was just a couple weeks old. it was so hard, and I didn't think I was up to trying again with H, so I decided to skip the whole thing. Honestly it was a great choice for us. DH has been able to split the night shift with me from the very beginning and H immediately started concolidating his sleep, which I contribute to the formula keeping him fuller for longer. I am a big supporter of breastfeeding, but formula was the right choice for us.
As far as the sleeping goes, I was like a nazi with A's sleep. I never let her go longer than an hour between naps, and even though I tried to follow her cues, I stressed about it a lot. I also rocked her to sleep and held her for most naps until she was almost 3 months. With H we've been trying to put him to sleep in a variety of ways so he doesn't become too attached to any one method; I haven't been rocking him for every nap and I've already started putting him in his crib for a couple naps. As a result, he's very easy to put down (so far) and he's already figured out the difference between daytime and nighttime sleep ( although his sister might have also helped with that one, lol).

@Honeybee: Splitting the night shift has been a huge help for me, especially with work.
As for sleep, Jack Jack is already sleeping in her crib for most of the night. She usually comes into our bed from 4-6 am when it's coldest in our room. She sticks to a nice sleep routine... Goes to bed at 7, wakes at 10 pm. Sleeps from 10 to 2, then wakes for feed. Wakes again at 4 and sleeps to between 6 and 8 am.
Lala never had structure like this! I would say that formula feeding helps, even though it wouldn't have been my ideal way to feed I feel like I'm so lucky that there are some good up-sides to it and I try to focus on those

@ Mrs. Jacks - It sounds like you're doing a fantastic job with JJ! I can't believe she's already on a schedule! And there are definitely perks to formula feeding; no reason to feel guilty about that!
