Building off of yesterday's blog post about limiting plastics, I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions for storing breastmilk in the freezer in vessels other than plastic?
Right now I'm planning on pumping into plastic storage bags and freezing. I'll be pumping at work so I want something convenient. I'm scared to freeze glass because I don't want it to shatter! Just wondering if anyone has any viable alternatives for a (hopefully) WOHM who breastfeeds/pumps? Thanks!

I'm under the impression some glass is freezer proof... but I don't know much about it.

I freeze mine into cubes in a silicone square set with a cover, and then transfer it into a big freezer bag. I figure at least that way it's not changing states while in the plastic. But I do use a different plastic cube tray, too, and also freeze in some medela bags, so I'm not all that concerned.

I haven't done this with breastmilk, but I don't know why you couldn't use glass jars. I re-use glass jars to freeze stuff all the time, just need to leave some room at the top for the liquids to expand.

@yin: Thanks for the link! I heard some mason jars use BPA in their lids so I'll have to make sure I get ones that are BPA free if I go that route.

@NorCalWayfarer: I have a friend that found an online supplier of glass jars with plastic kids with a standard opening. They are extra cheap because they aren't marketed as baby bottles. I think they are four ounces. She tested and they didn't shatter when frozen. Maybe she can post a link.

Would not storing in plastic have any benefit when the pump parts are plastic and you pump into plastic and feed the baby out of plastic? (Our daycare won't take glass, which I think is pretty common).

@NorCalWayfarer: Yeah, I just found that out last week. They mentioned to me when we start doing solids that we can't bring in glass containers.

@ShootingStar: my daycare said the same thing so I just bought some pura stainless steel bottles on amazon. I think I can take the milk in in glass though.

I wonder if you could freeze the milk in mason jars (maybe in quantities that make sense for a day at day care?) And then thaw it at home and prepare the bottles at home so you aren't sending the glass jar in. I believe they have stainless steel baby bottles. I would hope they would allow glass bottles, they thankfully don't break easily and for a long time your baby won't be chucking it...
