E was bit a week or two ago on the stomach. Apparently E doesn't yet understand "personal space"...

There is one notorious biter that we've dealt with for over 18 months. Luckily D has never bitten back.

Yes, to both! LO was bitten far more than she ever bit, but it just is a big bummer all around.

Yes and yes (several times!). Nothing that left a mark like that though...poor thing!

My kids have both been bitten but never the biter (as far as we know). My DS has also bitten himself at school, haha. They could not figure out who was biting him since they had been keeping the known biter away from him.. Until they caught him in the act...

My LO is a biter. We are working very hard on stopping it but not having much success.

@78h2o: She's not in daycare, I nanny and she comes with me so I'm there when it happens and usually have to pull her off. We do the "gentle" thing too and I always ask her to show me "gentle" and she'll stroke me or whoever she hurt. She's started pulling the dog's tail too and thinks it's funny, I know it's a totally normal stage but my word, I wish she'd grow out of it. How do you do timeouts with J? Do you sit with her? I usually pick A up and take her to the other side of the room then try give the other LO lots of attention, which sometimes works. I feel like redirection alone just isn't working. I also try tell her "we don't bite" while shaking my head then tell her what to do instead while nodding, because I don't fully know what she understands but she does know shaking head and nodding.

DS has been bitten twice. That last time, it broke skin and he had a scab on his back for a few weeks. It's just now going away. I'm not sure who it was or if it was the same kid both times. I'm told that both times, they were both going for the same toy and DS got bit. I feel bad for the little guy but trust that my DCP is doing all they can to mitigate these situations.

Now if we want to talk hitting, that's a whole other issue that we're trying to break. . .

My son is a biter. We work really hard on it. He bites when other kids take his toy eventhough he tells them "no thank you."

We have been both. He went through a phase of a few months where I got a few notes he had bitten, usually spurred by fighting over a toy. He also used to try to bite me fairly often. But he seems to have grown out of it without major incident.

He has also been bitten several times at daycare. The most recent time they broke skin and he had a pencil eraser size wound. Having been the parent of the biter before, I know it's not always controllable. It hasn't happened since, so I feel like everyone has been properly cautious.

We have also been both. Both suck, but I've got to say, after now having 2 kids in daycare, being the biter sucks more because your kids are doing something wrong and there is very, very little you can do about it if they don't bite while you're around. Bite wounds heal, and tears are dried, but changing your kid's behavior is a lot tougher. The older they get, the more effort you can put in to get them to stop because you can talk to them... but if they're biting before age 3 or so, they usually just don't understand consequences of their actions yet. You can ask anyone around us, we are super strict and tough on our kids when it comes to misbehaving, but Wagon Jr. has still been through several phases of a couple of incidents here and there. Luckily we have had great teachers who are willing to work with him closely. He has always been the youngest in his class so they are aware that he can get easily frustrated when he can't convey his feelings quickly enough.

We did, however, have a really awful experience where a kid told her parents that Wagon Jr. was the one who bit her, and even though the school told them it wasn't their policy to tell who the biter was, they hunted me down and called me, and asked to have a meeting about it. Let me tell you, there is nothing more awkward and horrifying than getting that call. They asked us what we planned to do about it, etc. What do you even say to that? You feel bad enough that your kid is a biter and you're not there to be the one to get it to stop happening. I felt sick for a week afterwards and even though we got through it, I still can't look that kid or her parents in the eye.

I have contemplated blogging about biting but I'm just too afraid of the blacklash and judgement, and I'm afraid that parent will find the blog post.

@mrs. wagon: i think you should do a blog about it! Biting is so common and I feel like the other side of biting is not understood by parents. I have been given dirty looks and ignored by parents when they found out B was a biter. It's not like I teach him to bite when he's upset. He's not even 2, he doesn't understand.

@NovBaby1112: I've had parents try and get my LO kicked out of daycare after he had 2 biting incidents in a week.

DS (19 months) has been bit about 6 times in the past month by a toddler that he has been in daycare with since they were 3 months old....apparently my son takes her toys and she doesn't like it. I can't get mad at the biter, she doesn't know any better, just like my son doesn't know better than to take a toy.
