My kid is almost 3 and I'm still nervous nelly about giving her a whole hot dog. I typically just cut it up for her. How old was your lo when they chowed down on a hot dog like a normal person? (haha)

DS is close to 18 months and he grabbed one the other day and just started chowing down on it . He's always done really well with eating and chewing though.

DS was 4 - it was summer camp and they had a picnic lunch - burgers or hot dogs - DS doesn't eat burgers so I picked hot dog and was terrified all day about him choking on that damn thing - luckily he survived
I imagine DD will eat her 1st one this summer

My daughter eats a hot dog whole, in a bun. She's been eating it like that for.....a long time. More than 6 months for sure.
If you want her to try eating it in the bun, try cutting the weiner length wise (so it's two long, skinny halves) which make it a bit less of a choking hazard.

I do, sometimes. He only wants the bun sometimes, though, so the other times I cut it up and give him mustard to dip.

Right around 3, at a ballgame, on a bun. Without a bun, it still gets cut up.

My DD is a refuser of hot dogs...along with burgers and pizza. I don't get it, she can't be my child .

Once but I usually cut it length wise at least. He doesn't eat with the bun though. Sometimes he takes a separate bite of that but not together.

M is 2.5 and I still cut them up. Who knows what DH does when I'm not here... I tell myself he's as careful as I am!

The first time was last 4th of July, whole in a bun. He was just over two.

I cut them up longer for Charlie, but the younger kid always does things earlier! We let her around 3.

I cut them up. I've just never thought not to? She eats plenty other typical choking hazard things fine so I'm not worried about that. She doesn't like it in a bun though and she doesn't like the skin.

I cut it into 2 halves (and cut the ends off). For my 15 month old. Never seemed to be an issue. My husband will probably be cutting it into minute pieces until she goes to college!

I've come across evidence that my LO has eaten whole hot dogs and sausage (walking in on someone feeding her or seeing the remnants on her plate). Probably right around the 2nd birthday. I don't serve her hot dogs (since I don't like them) but I would cut them up.

They were around 2, I think. I didn't delay that long because of choking hazards, though, but because they would only eat things "in pieces, mama. Pieces."

DS tried one around 3.5...he hated it. I cut one for DD around 2 and she didn't like it either so it's been a non-issue haha.

1.5...he's turning two today and we're having chili dogs for dinner, They're his favorite and he would be pissed if I cut them up! I'd probably stop that now before you start a picky eating habit where hot dogs get rejected unless they're cut up.

At least a year-she just picks it up and bites off a piece. She's 2

He's never actually had a hot dog. Well maybe one last summer? When ee buy a grill in sure he will eat them! I think they are considered a choking hazard till age 4 though.

Char ate a whole hot dog (bun and all) the first time around 2 1/2. Sometimes she asks for them cut up, sometimes she'll ask for it whole (but eats the bun separately). Toddlers are weird, yo.

I am seriously paranoid about my LO choking on a hot dog. Didn't any of you ever see Field of Dreams?! j/k
But seriously, I read this article (http://healthland.time.com/2010/02/24/why-pediatricians-are-advocating-a-hot-dog-redesign/) about how pediatricians were advocating for a hot dog redesign due to the choking hazard posed and the statement about the hot dog being "the perfect plug for a child's airway" stuck with me. I'll keep cutting them until she's older than 4.
*If you don't want to follow the link, here's the statement that scared me:
"Design for me the perfect plug for a child’s airway,’ you couldn’t do better than a hot dog. Unfortunately, it’s exactly the right shape of the airway, it’s the right diameter—it forms a plug, completely sealing off the upper airway, right above the vocal chords. Because of its shape and size, and because it’s compressible, it wedges itself in. It’s almost impossible to dislodge. Then it’s only a matter of minutes before there is irreparable brain damage and even death. As a pediatric emergency medicine physician, I can tell you, even if we are standing right there with all of our skill and experience, with all of the correct equipment and lighting, it is really hard to get those objects out of a child’s airway once they’re wedged in like that. It’s almost impossible. That’s why preventing this from occurring in the first place is so important."

@mediagirl: gah, yes! i can't stand them. she also digs grilled sausage hoagies which is fun. i don't think she could manage a whole one until three or four. always a mess though, but i would call that normal just from personal opinion

I think I will forever cut up hot dogs and grapes. It doesn't matter if DS knows how to chew well. It's the risk of the hot dog slipping down his throat by accident that scares the crap out of me! @78h2o: I'm paranoid like you. It's not worth the risk for me. That article is scary, but true.

Oh man I'm suoer paranoid about hotdogs. ŁO is almost 2 and I slice the hotdog up into pieces and then cut each piece into 4's. My mom watched a kindergarten kid choke on a hot dog once at a school BBq and she said it was one of the scariest moments of her life (he survived!).

She's 21 months and I still cut hot dogs, grapes, blueberries, etc.

@78h2o: That article is so scary but lists valid reasons for me not to give DD a whole hot dog. She's really horrible at chewing too and sometimes try to swallows big chunks of food and will gag then spit it all out.
grapefruit / 4997 posts
I've given her a corn dog to eat on her own and she's done really well so far (2 years old) but that article is scary so I think I will be cutting corn dogs up now too.
