Was it an informal or formal donation process?

Informal with our across the street neighbor. I had lots of milk and they were two guys so couldn't make any I donated all my spare milk to their little guy who now calls me "mama" since that's what Lala calls me and he doesn't have one, so he thinks it's my name!

@Mrs. Jacks: That is just about the most adorable thing ever. How great that you were able to do that for them and that you have such a sweet connection to that little boy!!

@MamaMoose: I wish I could show pictures of him on here because he is truly the most gorgeous, snuggly little boy ever. He makes me wish we had a boy!

@Mrs. Jacks: that's so awesome!
Sadly I tried to donate but couldn't because I had to have blood transfusions (twice, ugh) after giving birth.

I'm actually in the process of doing a formal donation. The donation cooler is sitting in my kitchen waiting to be filled with 400 oz of milk. It's been a pretty long process. I'm donating to a children's hospital milk bank. I filled out an online application, completed a phone interview, got confirmation from my physician and my daughter's pediatrician, took a freezer temp reading, gave a blood sample, and gave a DNA sample before being approved. I can provide a lot more details, including why I decided to go through a hospital milk bank, if you're interested.

@autumnlove: Thanks for starting this topic!
LO isn't here yet, but I may not be able to breastfeed him for medical reasons. He could potentially be a recipient. Priority goes to hospitals and premature babies, but if supply is available, it can be give on an outpatient basis with a doctors prescription.
You can get more information about how and where to donate from the Human Milk Bank Association of North America

I highly encourage anyone who is willing and able to donate to do so. There are lots of babies who can benefit!

@MusicaV: thanks for the info! I called that organization and went through a brief phone interview. Unfortunately, the milk in my stash can't be donated because I take fenugreek and blessed thistle supplements.

My understanding is that the official process is incredibly strict, so a ton of people are ruled out who would like to donate. I'm all for unofficial milk donation... In fact, I would love to look into finding a donor for myself, since my supply has been almost non-existent since day 1.

I'm giving 60ozs from my freezer stash to my BFF. I pumped it all before I started on an mspi diet and LO can't have it. I'm bummed my beautiful stash is no good to me, but happy my friend can use it at least.

I did a formal one-time donation through a milk bank. I donated about 1000 oz and wrote about it on my blog.

For those who are interested in the informal donation process (not through a milk bank), check out eatsonfeets.org and milkshare.birthingforlife.com. Both provide information about peer to peer milk sharing and avenues for matching donors and recipients.
