What about trying hand expressing some before trying to latch LO so your nipples aren't quite so shallow/hard?

@Jennimac: Try to actually squeeze some milk out before offering to LO. Sometimes they can't get a good latch if the breast is too engorged. Squeeze some out, try to latch, then repeat if you're still too engorged for her to latch. There's definitely a learning curve with this bf stuff, try not to get too discouraged!

Exactly what @kiddosc: said. If your breast it too full and hard LO will have a difficult time latching.

Agree with the suggestion to express a little before feeding. Also, do you have a nipple shield you could try? My LO had a difficult time latching the first few weeks but seemed to do better when I used one.

Eta...if you don't have a nipple shield on hand, you could also try pumping just for a minute to help draw out the nipple and also take the edge of any engorgement. Just don't pump for too long since you don't want to cause an oversupply.

@Jennimac: You need to do some Reverse Pressure Softening so that your LO can latch when you are engorged. It happened to me, too. Here is a great KellyMom article with pictures :

@Jennimac: So glad it went well. We had huge latching problems at the start and ended up using a nipple shield for a few weeks, which really helped. We also used milk collectors, which encouraged the nipples to stick out and made it easier for A to latch initially. Good luck, you're doing great!
