I have both a manual and a double electric pump, but I've been too intimidated to try the electric. I've used the manual a couple of times, but I'm unsure if the flanges fit correctly. I've looked for YouTube video tutorials, etc, online, and can't find anything that explains how they're supposed to fit while pumping. I know the nipple isn't supposed to touch the plastic. Right? But what about the areola? When I start pumping, it sucks the areola into the tube and presses against the sides (does that make sense?). It's not painful, per se, but it's not the most comfortable thing either. Am I doing it right? Do you have any resources to direct me to? I'd love to see an LC about it, but the nearest one is an hour away, so that's not really an option with a 3 week old at home.

It will pull a big of your Areola in but it shouldn't be too much. The nipples should not rub against the sides. There are a few pics you can find online, but it's all very confusing! Use a lubricant (lanolin or olive oil... I preferred olive oil) to avoid friction.

The nipple should basically be free, and not touching the sides of the flanges. It's really the areola that should be gently squeezed. Does that make sense? I had a problem where the standard size was too small, and my milk pumping production went up when i changed the size.

@Mrs Green Grass: I'd seen the diagrams, but I was confused if that was how it was supposed to look before pumping or during pumping. So really none/not much of the areola is supposed to be sucked in? I've been doing this ALL wrong.

@allison: Try out a couple of sizes.. I use the breast shield that is "too large", but I find it more comfortable and my milk output is slightly better. For me, the first minute of pumping is very uncomfortable, but after that it's pain free!
