I wondered this same thing!

I ended up counting the actual volume, not the volume of water I start with. I figured if we were feeding him anything else (breastmilk, ready to eat formula, etc), we'd go by the actual amount he drank.

What helped me switch to this is that I make all his bottles for daycare in the Dr. Brown pitcher. I send 5 oz bottles, but I mix 18 oz of water to 9 scoops of formula. As the volume increases it makes more of a difference, so I just go with what we see.

Nutritionally it’s a 4oz bottle, though volume is a bit more. But it counts as 4oz.
However I do think there’s some room for error since....if you make a batch of formula in the dr browns pitcher, say 20oz. And you only pour exactly 4oz if volume into the bottle....we count that as 4oz. But had you made a 4oz bottle IN the bottle it would have been more like 4.5 in volume so technically to pour in 4oz it’s probably a bit less than 4oz nutritionally.

It’s something that bothers me every time I make a bottle. Haha.

I voted the 1st option. But honestly I used a Dr. Browns formula pitcher and made the formula in bulk for the day. So for example I would put in 28 ounces and 14 scoops of formula and would actually end up with about 32 ounces of formula.

I count the water.

I guess I'm in the minority but bc we use th formula mixing pitcher a lot. I always count by the finished water+powder. So the 4 oz water makes a 4.5 oz bottle. But I stopped really counting after the first few months. (5 months now)

@2littlepumpkins: @jhd: which pitcher do you use? I tried the dr browns pitcher and it was always lumpy with lots of formula clumps ast the bottom

@Mrsbells: I only know because ours worked perfectly then one day it just didn’t. My babysitter had put it together upside down and when I flipped it back it was fine.

We used Enfamil, and on the container, it says to add the water first, then the formula, and each scoop counts as .2 oz. If you do the scoop first and then add the formula, you run the risk of constipating your LO!
