@Bao: hahahahahha, I told them unless I got a Tums, I wasn't pushing any more. The nurse said she couldn't so I told her to step out for a second so my husband could get one out of my purse! She did, then I was all good to continue!

3 effin hours. She was stuck, it went to a c-section. It sucked!

@lemondrop: lol so maybe I should pack a few or down a bunch before I get there.

About a half hour. I remember being surprised when they said baby will be here with the next push. I guess I had read mostly stories of women pushing for a long time, so that is what I had mentally prepared for.

@lemondrop: @Bao: The nurse was feeding me Tums like candy!
I pushed exactly 2 hours and 41 minutes.

4-5 hours. First I had to turn her because she was sunny side up (pushing on back, then side, then other side, then repeat over and over... But it worked!). Then she got stuck in the birth canal.

@NurseMommy: I had an epi with both! First delivery I had 3 failed epidurals. Second delivery went too far and became a spinal cath. First time around I pushed and pushed well, but his head was way too big and I was too exhausted from 24 hours of labor. As soon as the doctor placed the vacuum internally and I had help from her, he popped right out.
With my second, she just slipped right out. I probably could have gotten her out with a single push but the doctor wasn't ready yet! I barely even made an effort and she came right out. I was totally numb but so happy she came out so easily. Second labor was 8 hours total.

45 minutes. I probably could have done it faster if I'd have put more effort in from the start--but I didn't know how long it was going to take and it was exhausting so I was trying to pace myself. Once they told me the head was right there it seemed to go really fast.

2.5 hours, until they got the vacuum out! She was sunny side up though, the Dr said she would have been out in 3 pushes if she was face down

I'm not exactly sure - less than 30 minutes though. The staff kept saying they were impressed with how effectively I was pushing even with an epidural. M was tiny though, so I feel like I'll be super nervous to do it "for real" with a potential baby #2.

55 minutes. Th first few pushes were totally weak because I was too afraid of pooping!
pomelo / 5258 posts
It felt like 5 minutes but DH said it was 35 - 40 minutes. There was a while when they were only letting me push every other contraction. That part was awful. Not pushing was way harder than pushing. I'm guessing it was about 30 minutes of that and 5 minutes of consistent pushing.

4 hours. They finally vacuumed him out. They said they could see his head, but I couldn't sustain the push long enough to pop him out. I vaguely recall that maybe the cord was wrapped around him and kept pulling him back up?
I'm not sure that's true, because that's how I was born so maybe that's why I remember that? It's all a bit hazy now

2 hrs and 44 minutes. He was stuck, sunny side up, and not descending on his own so I pushed him from 0 station down, if I remember correctly! I remember my midwife telling me while she knew I wanted to "labor down" and wait to push she wanted to see if he would move down if I started pushing. I guess it worked!
It was awful! Such hard work!

@lemondrop: @Bao: @Weagle: I forgot about the super painful reflux while pushing til I read this thread! Luckily my nurse let me have sips of my coconut water.
I pushed almost 4 hours, posterior baby, vacuum, and mediolateral episiotomy. Spoiler alert: It wasn't fun

a little over 2 hours for me. she was slightly stuck (shoulder dystocia) and I'm not sure if that made it harder.

Never got a chance to push, they called for a C-section when I was 8cm.

@Bao: I threw up on the nurse I didn't like. She kept trying to stick a bag under my face. I made no effort to aim.
I actually think I threw up on everyone in the room at one point.
@mrs. wagon: they told me I might need a vacuum. I yell to "just suck it out already!" Apparently they don't do it on command.
@Corduroy: they told me to every other towards the end but I couldn't. I was so desperate at that point and my body just took over. It was just at the very end that I felt the urge to push since I had to start so early. I tore but I think they were telling me not to push because they were worried about exhaustion at that point.

It felt like eternity, but they tell me it was around 1 hour! I was in a very different mental place at the end there...
pineapple / 12566 posts
About 1 hour with my first. Less than 5 minutes with my 2nd (just 3 pushes!).
nectarine / 2994 posts
She was out in 1 actual push. I had gone to the bathroom after being checked at 4cm and suddenly got the urge to push. I was told it was just baby putting pressure on my bowel. 10 minutes of trying not to push when I was back on the bed and suddenly felt some pulsing down below, told midwife who had a look and said she could see the head. She told me to roll from my side to my back and the head popped out. One actual push later she was out. Pretty sure I put more effort in pushing the placenta out then I did LO!

Less than 5 minutes TOTAL for both. My oldest was out in 3 pushes - including the first one which I did wrong - and my youngest was out in 1.5 pushes. It was glorious.

1 hour 36 minutes for DS, then had DD yanked out by her feet (I still had to push to help, but it wasn't too bad). I must be an idiot, because I didn't think it would take that long! I knew labor could last a while, but because my mom had ultra short labors with my sister and I (2 hours with me,, 45 mintues with my sister) I thought I would be lucky like that. Nope.

Just over 4 hours. Baby got stuck but when they threatened a c-section at 3 hours I someone gathered the strength to push his stubborn arse out

I can't decide whether or not it was a good idea to open this thread...Now I'm nervous!

@Bao: YES!!!! DH said it was bc I ruined her dinner. LOL!
The nurse kept asking me if I felt like I needed to push and I said no. After a few more times, she wanted to check me. I was a 10 and ready to push! She called for the OB immediately, and the OB said something about how her dinner just arrived, but now she has to toss it because I needed to deliver. At the rate that I delivered, her dinner was probably still hot shoo!

@Alivoo01: I still ended up getting an episiotomy & I'm pretty sure I only knew about it because I asked!

20 minutes! I am expecting baby #2 to just slide right out
@Tidybee: lol! I told everyone in the room "Just don't say ANYTHING about poop!"
