I'm a little confused about how much breast milk my LO should be drinking. I exclusively pump. My LO is 5 months old and eats purees (pedi recommended starting early to see if it'd help her reflux, which it does seem to be doing to some extent). From what I've read online, on average, she should be getting around 25 ounces of breast milk per day.

But how do you factor solids into the equation? I've read that an ounce of breast milk has just shy of 20 calories. From what I gather, most of the food she's eating is around 30 calories per ounce. So it seems strange to keep her at 25 ounces of milk PLUS solids.

So let's say she eats 5 ounces of solids a day. Do we then reduce her milk to 20 ounces, to even it out and not overfeed her? Or do we just give her 25 ounces of milk plus solids?

A few months ago, our pediatrician was concerned that she had such a high BMI. She has reflux and we concluded that she was comfort nursing. He recommended we curb her milk intake to under 32 ounces a day, and this has worked pretty well for us. Despite her spitting up, she's within the normal range of weight. Solids have thrown us for a loop because we don't want to overfeed her, partly because that seems to contribute to the severity of her reflux. At the same time, of course we don't want to underfeed her.

Most of what I've found online has been along the lines of, "Just let them eat until they are full and you'll know they are getting what they need." But that has never been the case with our baby. If you let her drink milk until she decides it was time to stop, she'd eat and eat until most of it comes back up again. It's the same with solids. We've experimented a little bit, and even after drinking six or seven ounces of breast milk, she'll eat three ounces of solids at every meal.

The average baby consumes 500 calories a day. She easily puts away 75% more than that because of the solid food, and may even eat more if we let her.

My DH believes I'm overthinking it. I probably am. But I just don't know how much solids we should be giving her vs. how much milk. What do you do?
