My cousin (who is 18) will be babysitting my LO in a few weeks, and I am trying to figure out how much to pay her. I asked her what she charges but she hasn't told me, so now I'm stumped. I have been a nanny/babysitter for years, but haven't been for a year now and I'm not sure what they going rate is anymore.
How much do you pay your babysitter? I'm sure a lot depends on location too, but I'm looking for an average per hour or evening.

Around 10 is the norm in our area. We pay ours 12 because she's out of college and a bit more experienced.

Rounded to $20 for up to 3 hours. So, 1, 2 or 3 hours is $20, 4, 5, 6 is $40

I made $15/hr a few years ago but that was in NYC, which tends to be a bit more expensive (but everyone told me I could've charged $20, so...)

I pay our baby-sitter $15 an hour (we live outside of Boston). When I used to baby-sit 4 or 5 years ago, I made $12 an hour for one family and $20 an hour for another family (but I was more of a nanny for them since driving to activities, cooking, etc was involved).

I pay ours $10/hr. She told us she would take whatever we wanted to pay her and thats what I used to make. Apparently, that was much more than what she normally makes. lol

I'd pay $13-$20/hour based on experience. I still babysit every once in a while and average about $20/hour. Obviously I am an adult and have experience and drive, cook, etc.

We're in a suburb north of Pittsburgh, and the average is $6-$12 in our area. We pay $8.

I live in Michigan and the going rate is $7/h. I'd pay more if the sitter wasn't a teen.

@TurtleDoves: ok I live in MI too! Thank goodness the rate you suggested was lower than the others because at $15-$20 an hour my butt would be parked at home. I completely agree with paying a sitter well but we just couldn't afford as much as some of these. I think location is a huge factor.

@Bao: oh yeah-I'd be shocked if it were more, standard of living is low here in comparison to most places which in *this* case, benefits us!

We just had the girl next door come watch lo while she was sleeping (so no baby duty) and we were thinking of paying her $8-10 per hour. She is also only in middle school.
