LO is almost 13 months, and we've never had a sitter, which means we've had no time to ourselves/dates. I know one of her daycare teachers babysits, so I'm thinking of asking her. But, I don't know they going rate for babysitters. Do you pay different rates for daytime v. nighttime when LO would be mostly sleeping? What's the going rate where you live? I live in the Bay Area, and someone told me they pay around $25 for their sitter, but their child is much older than LO, so I wonder if that increases rates. $25 seems like an awful lot.

I def think it varies depending on where you live - but man $25 an hour??
I pay $12 for one kid or $15 for 2 and use the teachers at DCP

$25 an hour?? That seems like a lot. Last time we had a sitter she babysat from 7-10:30 and we gave her $50. Our LO is 2.

I wouldn't be able to afford a sitter at $25/hour!We use a high school student and live in a low cost area but we pay around $10. She always tells us it's too much, but it's minimum wage around here and she provides great care so I couldn't pay any less than that

I know daycare teachers charge a lot more because of their experience and demand.
If you can find a trusted college student or high school student it may be much less.
For example, I think daycare teachers charge like $20/hr for 2 kids, but a student might only charge like $12-15

yikes. our first nanny cost us $15/hour and she babysits sometimes. she had many years of experience though as a nanny and a former daycare teacher.
we had another college student who nannied for the summer and who we pay $13/hour for babysitting (and i think that is more than she is used to getting).
I am hoping as LO gets older, i will trust younger and less experienced babysitters so i can pay them less, not more! When LO was a baby/toddler and being a FTM, i was okay to pay the highest rate i found which was $15!
I haven't had a babysitter for overnight, so i have wondered how i would pay that. But if you mean an evening where we go out for dinner and movie and all they do is put LO to bed, then have a few hours to watch TV while we are out, i pay the same rate.

So it sounds like $10-15 is in the normal range. I asked a grad student what she charges for babysitting, and she also quoted me $25. Maybe its my area?

@Pumpkin Pie: wow. maybe it is your area. i live in a very expensive big city in Canada though. and i have heard that the higher end around here can be up to $20/hour....but for a college student? that's nuts.

I live in the Bay Area (east bay) and we pay $20 an hour for two kids (4yr and 1.5yr).

$15/hr in the Boston area. My LO is 2 and our babysitter is one of her former daycare teachers.

@Pumpkin Pie: That's crazy. We live in the DC area which I feel is pretty expensive. Our nanny charges $10/hr per kid and we sometimes hire a friend's au pair who charges $12/hr for both girls. We pay the same during the day or at night (but we pretty much only get sitters after dd2 is in bed!).

I live in the bay area... I haven't used a babysitter yet (I have family in the area). But I just asked my co-workers and 18-20/hr (Sunnyvale, San Jose, and Pleasanton) seems about the norm. 25 seems kind of high unless she has a background in child development... maybe?

So I have 2 baby sitters I use that live in my neighborhood. Now one is 11 and the other is 12. Both have gained my trust through spending time with my son and doing "trial" baby sitting jobs that are 30 minutes. Both have taken their babysitter courses and I pay them $4.50/hr. They have never sat longer than 3 hours. Yes I do think they're a tad bit young but their great with my lo and it's good training & experience for them

I live in the Bay Area and that sound in the normal range for the area. I think $16-30 is the range here, depending on experience. I have friends who hire young high schoolers for less though.

$25 an hour is crazy! I did some babysitting up until I had DD 2.5 years ago and got paid $10 an hour. I think that's pretty standard for my area.

I used to baby sit for a couple families when I was in DC (not the burbs) and I got $20 an hour.
Around here (Toronto) it's $12-$15

When we lived in NM it was 15/hour. We pay our nanny 17/hour in Maine, day or evening.
