So I'm a SAHM and DD is exclusively breastfed. She always nurses except when I am out of he house. She does not take bottles well, if I am gone, she will usually refuse to eat until I get home (no breast milk, will only eat solids). My goal was to breastfeed until she is one (she's 9 months now). I know that weaning can be a long process, so I am thinking of maybe starting now. So, how do I go about doing this when she is exclusively nursed? Also, is it better for me to just wait until she is ready rather than doing it in my terms?

She needs either BM or formula until she's 1. I'd work on getting her to take a bottle or cup before trying to wean.

@Mrs.Someone: I should clarify, I don't want to wean her off breast milk. I have a huge frozen supply. Just curious on some tips of how to work towards her taking that instead of nursing.

@schubr03: I've had friends whose babies refused bottles but eventually drank breastmilk from straw cups instead. Have you tried that at all?

@Foodnerd81: yes, she'll drink out of a straw cup, but she only takes sips. She doesn't drink the whole thing in one sitting.

@schubr03: how many nursing sessions is she having each day? I'd probably start with dropping the "snack" sessions whilst working on her drinking from a sippy or straw cup.

9 months is still young to be drinking tons out of a cup. It's great she has figured out how to use it. Id keep offering and eventually she will drink more from it. I dont know the best way to go about weaning since DD was taking bottles at daycare and they just did the switch to cups cold turkey around 1, but I continued nursing when we were together. You might have to just go cold turkey if you don't want her to self wean? I found that naturally, over time as she got older, she preferred a cup because it was less disruptive to her playtime. Also, she drinks way less cows milk than she ever did breastmilk, so it's not like you need her getting 30 oz from a cup a day. We do one sippy of milk a day unless she requests more. If she doesn't drink it all oh well, she eats well enough that I'm confident she's getting nutrients elsewhere. Milk isn't a requirement, just an easy source of nutrition.

We went to nursing mornings and evenings/nights at that age. I/they dayweaned since they both really got into solids by 9 months and ate tons during the day and drank water from a sippy just fine. At 11/12m I just started to offer WCM with both breakfast and dinner. Both my LO guzzled them down. This led to both of them first skipping/refusing the evening session and then the morning session. My DS was weaned at 13.5m (I was also pregnant) and my DD has just weaned now at 14.5m.
