After 2 early losses, we were sent for initial fertility testing at a private fertility clinic. I had to ask my doc for the referral though.

They did basic testing like sperm analysis, thyroid, FSH, and also karotyping. Karoyping is a more advanced look at genetics and if there is possibility for a genetic disease in either one of your DNA, thus causing the infertility.

Our results came back fine (still waiting on the karotyping results though). The doctor basically said we just need keep trying the old fashioned way.

ETA: They also wanted me to go for a hysteroscopy, which I think is what you mean as the x-ray. Where they inject they blue dye and then perform an x-ray to have a good look at your uterus. I was too chicken to do it though! And by the time by appt rolled around, I was already in the TWW with my current BFP, so I cancelled the apt. I thought it would be painful and after two losses I'd felt like I'd been poked and prodded and tested enough.

@Ajsmommy: The ultrasound tomorrow will be to look at your ovaries when they aware quiet, before follicles start developing. They may check your antrafollicle count which is how many follicles are visible, this tells the a bit about your ovarian reserve. The blood work may test for all kinds of stuff so it really just depends on what specifically the Dr ordered. I would assume at a minimum they will check, estrogen, FSH and progesterone levels, maybe things like AMH and thyroid, etc.

The xray you are mentioning is an HSG, they will fill your uterus with fluid and look at it to see if there are any obvious abnormalities and if your tubes are open.

Once the doctor has the results of everything they will be able to determine a plan of action. Try not to research too much right now. Feel free to post on the infertility boards any time, there are many ladies who have been through it and can answer any questions you might have.

We just started the infertility testing/appointments when we got a BFP. It crazily enough took 3 months to finish all the blood tests and semen tests. My first appointment took place like the day after my cycle they wanted the blood test drawn so I had to go wait a month. Then there was tons of confusion about the blood tests and what needed to be ran, and not everything got done... so we had to wait another cycle... which I was out of town on a camping trip.... so finally had to wait another cycle to finish all the tests. It was a rather annoying experience.

And then my DH didn't want to do the... "donation" for semen analysis. (Mix of embarrassment/worry I think.) But he finally got it done in it time for the appointment to review all the tests... Which took place on day 28 of my cycle... and my cycle is usually 26 days so I was like wait... and took a test the night before my appointment. At the appointment we were to discuss our next steps but instead she went over the results with me (I asked as I was curious) and everything was great and then she sent me off for a blood test to confirm the pregnancy.

So I can't give to much advice but just share my experience. Hopefully going to the doctor will help remind your body what to do an you'll get your BFP soon.

My husband had a semen analysis first (because it was the easiest thing to do), and when it came back horribly, my RE and DH's urologist recommended starting fertility treatments. But first, I had to run through my own tests so they had a full picture of what they were working with. So I had the regular Day 3 workup, including TSH, LH, FSH, E2, AMH, plus viral and blood count panels. I then went in for an SHG, which is like a HSG except it uses a sonogram instead of an x-ray to look for blockages. Then I had LH surge testing and progesterone testing during/after ovulation. All my tests came back normal except for my TSH, which was slightly elevated, so they put me on Synthroid. During this time I read a lot of books and papers on fertility treatments, because I wanted to know what the latest research was and what kinds of protocols to expect. I also talked to my insurance to figure out exactly what and wasn't covered. After all the test results were in, we had another consult with my RE, and we agreed to start with an IUI my next cycle. But two days later my period was late, and now I'm 26 weeks pregnant. I don't know if it was the SHG (there's anecdotal evidence that it can "clear your tubes"), the Synthroid, or just the luck of of the draw. The process can definitely be overwhelming, but overall for me, it felt really good to have a clear picture of our health and an action plan. Hopefully you'll end up not even needing it!
