Was birth the most painful thing you've experienced?

@Mama Bird: I wasn't allowed to move around due to some complications! I was constrained to bed and had to labor in one position the entire time. Ugh. There went my birth plan.

Tearing my ACL hurt much more.

It was but it also wasn't as bad as I expected it to be.

I think my herniated disc pain was worse. Plus it lasted months upon months.

I honestly found my mc more painful. Maybe because I was losing something and not gaining a beautiful baby, but it was excruciating pain. Birthing my LO was painful too but with an epidural it was more manageable.

    Nope, I've had worse headaches

Yes, I think so. I remember very clearly thinking that I never wanted to have another baby after LO came out. Heh. Getting an epidural was such a good decision for me.

Yes, it was the worst pain, but I've never broken a bone or had any major injuries. I do recall one moment (probably when I went from early labor to active labor) when I looked at Dh and said, "This is going to really f*cking hurt, isn't it?" So eloquent.

But it wasn't as bad as I feared, and I did it med free. No back labor though. And I seriously cannot remember what contractions felt like, which is insane. I'll never forget the ring of fire but seconds after that baby was in my arms and I didn't care about the pain.

@catlady: in the delivery room I asked the midwife and nurse both if the second one really is easier. They were like, let's just get the first one out, ok?

It was by far the most painful thing I've ever experienced. It wasn't as bad as I expected though.. I never hit a point where I actually wanted pain meds.

Yes...but only when the doctor broke my water. The pitocin contractions felt just like my BH before then. I needed an epidural after my water was broken - back labor with a sunny side up baby who never turned...but then the epidural wore off so pushing was the worst pain I've ever felt. I didn't feel the ring of fire though.

No. I had a completely natural birth and passing a kidney stone was still worse!!

Nope, wisdom teeth removal. It lasted for almost a month. Child birth was bad but labor didn't last long.

Yes. I was banking on an epidural and I wasn't able to get one, so I was not at ALL prepared for how painful childbirth would be!

  15. SleepyMonkey

    grapefruit / 4006 posts

Yes, by far, but I have conveniently forgotten how exactly painful it was. I just remember bursting into tears because my post pitocin contraction was so much more intensely painful than anything is ever felt before.

    On a scale of 1 to 10:

10 - Corrective surgery for scoliosis (13 hour surgery where vertebrae were removed, rods screwed onto the spine, bone marrow transplant).

    8 - Kidney Stone

7 - Labor (high levels of pitocin and cervadil might have influenced it)

5 - Wisdom Teeth Removed (developed dry socket )

    4 - Broken Arm

    3 - Recovery from emergency c-section

  17. artsyfartsy

    cantaloupe / 6692 posts

No but i only made it to a 4 before epidural and eventually c section.
I had Pitocin induced contractions but nothing compared to the hospital visit I had a week before where my stomach was cramping up and having sharp pains in my side, then contracting underneath it. I screamed and wailed through every contraction until it eased off. Pitocin induction was NOTHING compared to that.

I had two med free births, both excruciating tidal wave contractions, including one episiotomy with a mere nerve block and I still felt the pain. Most painful.

I did have eye surgery (muscle) on both eyes in my early 20s and that was extremely painful as well...more prolonged pain.

Contractions were some of the most painful moments of my life. But I felt so normal in between them that it doesn't strike me as the most painful thing ever. But I think it was.
ETA: The most painful moment of my life was my doctor with literally her whole forearm inside of me trying to turn my sunny side up daughter. Oh. my. god.
I did get horrifically burnt in a tanning bed when I was a teenager and that was pain all over my body for days and I had no break from it, so I think that takes the cake.

Like out of this world, yes. Mine was NOTHING like it had been previously described. I had all back labir like a seizure back there. It was insane. 17 hours unmedicated, contractions started at 5 minutes apart...

The back labor I had before the Epi was pretty freakin painful, but the pushing on my belly afterwards was by far the most painful thing I've ever experienced. Really not looking forward to that again.

I've had more acute pain with my bladder disorder. And I've had a lower grade pain that was much longer lasting (months) and that is hard to deal with in it's own way. But birth is the only thing that has made me scream in pain. I do feel like I am starting fo forget already. It was weird his much pain of the first birth I started to re remember right before my second.

I had an induced labor with cervidil, a foley bulb, and pitocin. My water broke on its own which amped up my (back labor) contractions to every 2 minutes. I ended up getting an epidural and then an eventual c-section.

For me labor was not the most painful thing I've been through. Honestly for me, the UTIs I've had have been worse (but I get them really bad). And also breastfeeding has (sometimes) been more painful than contractions. I have cried through many nursing sessions out of pain-- but never cried during labor. (But my bf journey has sucked more than most)

@BeachMama: Back labor with a multiple failed epidurals, but the pushing on the stomach was the only thing that made me scream out in pain

  27. Corduroy

    pomelo / 5258 posts

Initial breastfeeding with an inverted nipple hurt the worst for me. I guess I didn't do enough research but I wasn't expecting LO to be tearing tissue to get my nipple out. So much screaming, cursing and crying for weeks until I gave up. That was after 51 hours of unmedicated back labor.

  28. wonderstruck

    pomegranate / 3791 posts

    Most definitely.

I passed two kidney stones with no pain medication in my first trimester and everyone said, "Oh, so you're prepared for childbirth now!" HAHAHAHAHA. No. And I never even made it to pushing (emergency c-section), so I'm just talking contractions.

This seems to be something that just really varies from person to person, because some of the things I see people comparing to their childbirth pain, or saying those things were worse than their childbirth pain, are things that I have experienced and for me contractions were a thousand times worse.

  29. allison

    pear / 1895 posts

Absolutely. I've had kidney stones before, and they were pretty horrific, too, until I popped some pills and fell into a sedated haze. So I can't say they were more painful. I've also had a couple very painful migraines. Had those gone on for 36 hours, like my labor did, they might win out.

@Mama Bird: Same here. I had a toothache that was so painful that I had to go to the ER. That hurt worse than giving birth. I had to get morphine in the butt to even touch that pain. I did get an epidural but only for the last hour since I felt like I couldn't breathe. I'd have asked for an epidural in my face if it would have fixed my toothache.

  31. Mrs. Oatmeal

    blogger / honeydew / 7081 posts

Yes, it was absolutely awful. But at the same level of pain- my 30+ stitches got wickedly infected 2 days postpartum, and the ER doctor had to do an internal exam. THAT, to this day, remains the worst pain of all.

I think its a tie between childbirth with no epi and waking up from my 2 knee surgeries before I got some pain meds. The thing with having a baby is that the pain goes away almost immediately but it takes a long time to heal.after surgery. I'd take another unmedicated birth over surgery any day.

    Contractions, hands down.

  34. lamariniere

Definitely! Had an epi with LO1, so it wasn't that bad, but LO2 was very fast and incredibly painful and I remember thinking I would definitely never have any more after her!

  35. Honeygold89

    nectarine / 2527 posts

No I think when I was having back spasms and my back locked up on me was more painful then giving birth because I got stuck on the floor and couldn't move I even cried and I think a bad tooth ache is worst then labor too and I had a natural birth so I can say it definitely wasn't as bad as every one said and I expected. I have a high pain thrush hold though

  36. swedishfish

@Honeygold89: my back spasms after giving birth were pretty bad too.

  37. Ajsmommy

Recovering was worse for me then the actual birth. However, I was induced and honestly never felt any bad contractions. I didn' t even know I was having them unless I read the monitor thing. I had an epi and foley bulbs. When LO was crowning/ring of fire I did scream and I'm not looking forward to THAT again but it was such a short period of time that I remember it but dont' really remember it..... The abundant bleeding and pain while using the restroom for 2 weeks PP was wayyy worse for me and I had a fairly easy recovery! But I remember being in tears just wanting to be able to use the restroom normally again!!!

I think my kidney stone was worse than giving birth! But admittedly I had a fabulous epidural and several redoses...and when it wore off at 10cm I cried like a baby and made them give me more drugs before I pushed her head out...so maybe it's a tie?

  39. mdf106

    clementine / 828 posts

No. This thread is making me glad I had an epidural. It was not even as bad as the worst cramps I have had. I have had a lot of non-serious things that have hurt worse, I have a very low pain tolerance.

yes! not the contractions part bc my epidural worked pretty well, but the pushing part. omg the pushing....I still have nightmares about it!
