For those with LOs in district PreKs, do you have to label your kids stuff? Will last name suffice? Or are labels (Mabel label) easy enough to remove when you want to that its not a big deal for sibling sharing clothes etc? Thanks!

I'm intending to use sticky labels with first name, last initial, and will peel them off of coats etc. when I hand them down to DD2. Not sure if most NYC preKs will require it, but I'll do it to help ensure we don't lose anything!

I say even in early elementary school continue labeling anything you want to come home. At the end of each of the previous two years I had amassed a HUGE collection of clothes in my grade one room which "nobody" owned. lol. Labels would have been lovely.
Use first name for labelling so you child can identify their own things, most kids can barely read their own name in pre-K, their last name is unneccesary. You could write First name last initial incase their are two kids of the same name, if that is your concern.
However if you're buying school supplies, check to see if the teacher does community supplies, because then don't.

@Mrs. D: oh good tip! At daycare NY State requires full first and last name. Didn't know if the rules applied to grade school too.
What else would you suggest labeling besides clothing? Thanks!

@regberadaisy: shoes, boots, backpacks, umbrellas, lunchbags, toothbrush, hairbrush..... basically anything that goes to school with your child.

Heck, continue labeling in middle school! My MS's lost and found is crazy big! Lots of expensive North Face jackets, shoes, lunch boxes.
I label everything for daycare. Those sticky name tags are great and not too expensive!

@Mrs. D: LOL!
@Alba4: oh hells no. If my kid is wearing a NF, I'm labeling that!

We label everything that goes to school with full name. My DS lost his North Face jacket last year. It turned up in the lost and found of my DD's school of all places at the end of the year. The school counselor recognized our last name and sent it home with my DD. We also label show and tell items for my DS. The inside of shoes.Stuffed animals and blankets they get to bring in for Polar Express day, etc. The labels peel off easy and may leave a residue that is easily removed with goo gone.

We don't have much to label at all. Her backpack is embroidered with her name and had a luggage style tag. She keeps a change of clothing in her bag and her locker (locker is in the classroom). The teacher requested each change of clothing be in a gallon ziploc bag and just label the bag.
Supplies are community style so they were not labelled. She has a nap blanket as well, but it's kept in her locker and comes home on Friday.
Her lunchbox is also embroidered with her name.
