Did you have an over supply?

That's a pretty good lip tie. Most times when woman are not effected by a lip or tongue tie that had a very healthy or over supply.

She should have the lip tie surgically untied if it's causing an issue.

DD's lips looked like that but the LC never said anything about being lip tied. Her lips never really flanged out when she latched so the LC just told me to flip them out after she latched.

P was severely tongue-tied. It caused us lots of feeding issues, but didn't cause me any nipple pain.... I did have over-supply issues though so that may have been why I wasn't negatively affected. Our biggest issue was P not being able to stay latched & not being able to get a good seal so she swallowed LOTS of air.

We had it clipped in office by a pediatric dentist at 7 weeks against the recommendation of our pedi & ENT who both said the tie would not cause any issue with breastfeeding. Needless to say P immediately nursed better, more effectively, she stopped swallowing so much air, AND her weight gain improved.

I would definitely look into getting it clipped & if there are any weight gain issues I would require it to be clipped before supplementing. That's my personal stance & what my plan was if we weren't able to find the pedi dentist & our pedi gave me flack.

Hope your friend can get it fixed & move on with nursing her lo!

I thought you said you didn't have any issues. I wouldn't suggest getting a lip tie done at your sons age, unless its doctor recommended. In the early stages, it might be worth it.

A lip or tongue tie will cause supply issues in most nursing pairs. Tongue tie causes more issues though than the lip.

@rachiecakes: after you got your supply issues "fixed" was your LO always a slow gainer?

@rachiecakes: I bet in the next 6 months you'll see a change in that. This more than likely caused small issues for you two that you just weren't aware of at the time.

My LO was seen by the ENT in town yesterday and I was told that he was unable to help me. I left pretty unhappy. I did get a call into the Childrens hospital to get it repaired though.

DD is lip tied and we didn't do anything about it. We go to the dentist next month for her first check-up and I'm going to ask him about it because there is a gap between her front top teeth.

DS had a lip tie similar to the picture you posted. On the advise of a friend (and LC in training) I went to a local dentist and had it clipped (with a laser). He also examined DS and found that he has a posterior tongue tie (at the back of the tongue) and took care of it with the laser as well. There is a group on Facebook that has lots of resources about tongue and lip ties. I had lots of pain, smooshed nipples, bleeding/cracking as well.

@hilsy85: yep. We just got discharged from the hospital and have an appt with the pediatrician and another LC this afternoon. We have a back up ENT appt for Wednesday but hoping we can get it fixed before then. Have been syringe feeding and just used a bottle this morning. Made me so sad

@aprk: Tbh not breastfeeding just wasn't an option for me. We spent ALOT of time nursing... Pretty much constantly on/off nurse for a minute maaaybe 2 then back off. We also lived on gas drops bc of the air P would swallow. I did try a bottle but it didn't really help & possibly jeopardizing my supply due to lack of suckling worried me so back to the breast is how we stayed.

I read alot of kellymom on the first few weeks, "are mothers supposed to loving breastfeeding 24 hours a day", & just relied on her output to ensure she was actually eating enough. It was really tough but we got through it!

I really hope you can get it taken care of in office without issue & your pedi supports you in fixing it! (Ours didn't)

We had a bad tounge tie & a mild lip tie. I thought about fixing it, but I decided to EP instead. I wanted to pump anyways. So, I did! At some point (maybe 9-11w old), he was old enough to latch well, despite his issues. So, at that point we became 50% pump 50% breast.

@hilsy85: Weight gain is great (85%) and no pain - just soreness if he nurses overnight but I think that is due more to crappy positioning/both of us being half asleep.

I was running the horror through my head of having it clipped at 10 months - I can't even.
