@Smurfette: Have you done that before? I wouldn't even know where to start - do I just call them up and say "Hey, I want to rent a breastpump!" ??

@Adira: My friend did. I asked her about it cause I almost rented one but I got mine the next day. She said you just call any medical supply place. You don't have to rent through the hospital.
I think @highwire: rented one while waiting for her free one, you can ask her.

@Smurfette: OMG, I was just looking for rentals, and I found a local place I can rent the Medela Freestyle, but it costs $299 for two weeks! WTF!!! I could just BUY it for that price!!!

@Adira: What??!!?? That is nuts. I think my friend said she paid $50 for the month.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@Smurfette: Okay, that would be waaaaay more reasonable! I tried calling both my local hospitals, but got voicemails. I can't just leave my number for them to call me back because I can't have my cell at my desk and I definitely don't want to be talking breast pumps on my work phone for everyone to hear me!

@Adira: You can't have your cell phone at your desk?
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@Smurfette: haha, I work for a defense contractor and am in a closed area, so we're not allowed to bring in phones or USBs or anything like that.
Just called my hospital and left them a message! Guess all the guys around me will just have to listen to me talk about breast pumps (assuming they call me back)!
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@Adira: Ahh, that makes sense then. Although I would be lost without my phone.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@Smurfette: Yeah, it's hard not being able to have it with me. And then I have to decide do I want to make personal calls at my desk where everyone can overhear me, or go out in the hallway to do it. And if I get a voicemail, I'm like "Argh! Do I just try again later or have them call my desk phone??"

So the woman I talked to at the hospital said she might be able to test my pump to make sure it's working correctly. I could rent a pump from them at $2/day, but she said it was pretty big and bulky and not easy to lug back and forth to work, so it might not be ideal for me. They also sell the Medela PISA for $250, which is cheaper than other places, so that's an option. Sooooo... I don't know what to do!
BUT since I was talking to a lactation specialist, I did talk to her about how daycare thinks Xander needs more in his bottles, and she basically agreed with me that 15oz during the day should be plenty and since he's sleeping through the night, he's probably fine. And she said it was normal that his growth has slowed down and as long as he's still gaining, I'm probably all set. So that made me feel better!

@Adira: Could you rent it over the weekend? And see if you get more then normally, like first thing in the AM after feeding him? Since that would be a normal time you would pump so can compare the ozs. $250 isn't bad at all for a brand new one.

@Smurfette: Oh, that's a good idea! I have Friday off, so maybe I'll see if I can have them test mine and rent theirs while I'm at it.

@Adira: @ $2 a day I would definitely rent the pump for a couple of days. You should notice a difference in suction immediately. If it's your pump then I think you should definitely buy the PISA. I've used both the hospital grade and the PISA. I preferred the hospital one, but my output was the same with both. If I'm running short on time I can pump 75% in ~7 minutes. I usually pump 15-20 minutes though so I get 2 full letdowns. If it makes your life easier, then it's worth the investment!

@LaineysMom: Do you know what hospital pump you rented? I think ours is the Medela Symphony, but she made it sound like it was really big and bulky and not great for me to lug to and from work, so I wasn't sure it would be really worth it... what do you think?
clementine / 916 posts
@Adira: I used the symphony, but it was when DD was in the special care unit. It is big and I wouldn't use it for work. If I did, I would leave it at work..
I would suggest you just rent it for the day to try it. If it works better than your current pump then buy the PISA. If you're planning on pumping for 7 more months then it will be more cost effective to buy it.

I have a PISA and it works out really well - it only takes me 10-15 min to pump plus 5-10 minutes of set up/clean up. I would say if you are still thinking to try a different pump it would be a great one. I used the Symphony at the hospital for a day and didn't notice that much of a difference transitioning to my pump at home. If you can try out the Symphony at home and see if it makes a difference for your output then I think $250 is a pretty good price for the PISA! The Symphony isn't that huge but I don't think it's easy to transport the way other pumps are in their little carry bags. (My work offers a Symphony pump to use but it just stays sitting down on a little table in our mother's room)

@LaineysMom: Okay, so it is big and bulky like she said! That's a good idea though to try it out and then buy the PISA if the symphony works so much better than what I have.
Do some pumps work better than others because they have a stronger suction? I could increase the suction of mine, but I'm afraid it will hurt... Is there another reason some pumps are better than others?
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@dojo: Wow! That's so cool that your work has a symphony people can use!!! Do you just buy your own parts or something? So cool!
persimmon / 1223 posts
@Adira: it is pretty cool! I just use my PISA since I had it before going to back to work but I have considered just buying the parts to transport back and forth to work instead (they even sell a set of parts through my work for $50 I don't know if it's the best price). You have to book the room specifically for the station with the pump though so it might change me scheduling if I did that. But it is nice to have the option!

I like it but have only tried it and the symphony. It still takes me forever to empty though so it might not make as much difference as you want it to.

So as an experiment, I upped the suction on my Avent as much as it could go and pumped. I WAS able to empty my breasts in 15 minutes, which is a considerable improvement. BUT my nipples were like totally engorged and tender after so... not sure that's a good option.
But now I'm thinking... if it's the high suction that makes the PISA work well, I'll have the same issue with it, right?
pomegranate / 3452 posts
@Adira: do you have the right flange size? I'm assuming you do, but maybe with the high suction you could change it up? I dunno.
honeydew / 7811 posts
@Adira: I love it as much as one can love a pump! I've never had another to compare it to though.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@aprk: Well the Avent only has two flange sizes - the normal and the large, and I suspect the large would be too big!
