we have/had a freestyle that came with the soft flanges -- I ended up not using them much because they were the wrong size for me, so I sized up in the hard plastic style.

I remember thinking they were fine, no problems, but I didn't feel they were much different than the regular ones, either.

I don't think there is much of a difference in terms of suction, or the silicone actually helping the suction. they were slightly softer against the breast, I think.

@Skadi: i had them and really liked them even though they were discontinued due to complaints. Where online? I need new ones!!

I had them. They helped some at first, but the more postpartum I became and as my breasts changed shaped I ended up needing smaller flanges (the smallest they sell, which are not really sold in stores so I had to order from Medela).

This was a few years ago, so I do not know if they still do it this way, but if you call Medela and explain to them your problem they will help you trouble shoot, and if you end up needing larger/smaller flanges they used to send you out a set for free!
