OMG I will kill my MIL or/or my Mom if they did this! I hate how our parents think that we're all ridiculous with our "new" baby-raising techniques and are so quick to dismiss! I am going to put the Smack Down on them when it comes to Harper because I know that they will BOTH be offenders, and both would totally do something like that.

Babies are not dogs! You can't give them table scraps! It annoys me when they feel my chihuahua things they shouldn't, I cannot even imagine my reaction when they do something like this to the baby (and they will, I just know it.).

@autumnlove: yeah he should totally do that. I don't think this would ever be okay at all.

She may have been a parent longer - but that does NOT mean she is either a better parent than you, or even a good parent. My mom made stupid choices/decisions with us when we were kids that she definitely regrets because of the lack of information back then. Your MIL might think that based on what she knew back when she had LO's that it's ok (they survived, right?!) but that doesn't mean it's ok. It's not simply an issues of "surviving" (and isn't that the argument they put out?!), but thriving instead.

ugh. still this just makes me so mad. Totally have your DH put his foot down. Not ok.

I can forgive the dairy and sugar (although I would be super upset), but feeding a baby nuts is going way over the line.

Sure she's been a parent longer than any of us, but things have changed a lot. Nut allergies are much more common now, from what I understand. What would she have done if the baby went into shock?

Bottom line- it doesn't matter what she did with her babies. This is YOUR baby- therefore, it's your call what goes in her mouth.

Definitely have DH talk to her and lay down the law.

Wow. I would be livid if anyone fed my baby ice cream! But her response to you makes the situation even worse! Ugh.

Wow. My mom has fed my LO things she shouldn't..... strawberry jello before one, but when I told her that strawberries were a no she was apologetic and didn't make that mistake again. I felt like it was my fault because I didn't give her the list of no's so I wasn't hard on her, and from then on I made sure to tell her what my LO couldn't eat, and she always made sure to follow it. If she didn't, I wouldn't let my LO alone with her, simple as that.

She does give my LO things like ice cream and sweets, things that I wouldn't give her, but nothing that will actually hurt her in small amounts.

I would be so pissed! I could forgive the dairy. We've been giving DS yogurt since he was 7 or 8 months. The sugar and nuts would make me crazy though!! I would also be pissed about the "I've been a parent longer than you." So what? I would definitely have your husband address the situation. I think that was uncalled for.

Luckily, we don't see MIL often. She used to be a nurse though and has made it clear that she would never feed him anything without approval. My mom once pitched a fit about giving LO cereal in a bottle when he was a newborn. I basically had to avoid leaving my baby with my own mother.

If she pulls the "I've been a parent longer than you" I would stand up to her and say "Are you saying I'm not a good parent?"
You need to be more in her face and show her exactly what she is saying to you--let her hear how mean it is. Make her own up to it.
And tell her (not just have DH tell, but you also) that you are introducing foods in a certain way and if she wants to take care of your LO at all, she needs to respect your rules.

I hope your LO is ok.

Side note: A friend babysat for my LO last night (AWESOME!) but gave him some gas drops and he hasn't pooped all day! Not the same scale as what your MIL did, but if I'm upset about that, I can't even imagine how you are feeling now.

I guess I am the odd one out, I wouldn't be pissed. AFAIK, dairy under a year isn't terrible, I have been giving my son yogurt from cows milk since he was 8 months old. It's all about information, and when people don't have information, they get defensive. I've learned to pick my battles, that's for sure.

I'd probably not have my husband "lay down the law" either. If it were my MIL, I'd inform her of our choices myself. I don't believe in the "I deal with my parents, you deal with yours" way of thinking. I have no issue if my husband informed my parents of our kid's sleeping habits, for example.

I would be so mad! I'm afraid my MIL will be like this with our LO. She used to feed our niece all kinds of things without my SIL's consent.
