How early did you realize your LO had a milk allergy? And how did you know?

I found out my LO was lactose intolerant after 12 months. Regular WCM gives her the runs and rashes. I stopped drinking milk after she was born.

R had a milk protein intolerance discovered when we started supplementing with formula on a regular basis. She was around 12 weeks old but was fine with dairy in my diet though.
We are now trying to determine if whole milk is an issue for her as well. But she's fine with yogurt and cheese.

So if his poop isn't affected is it not an allergy? He has had a miserable rash on his bum since the day we left the hospital; it's so bad that he has sores that won't heal. And it's only where his poop touches his skin. It's clear that his poop is toxic. That was the first thing that made me think there was something about the formula that wasn't working, but I forgot. Then he started getting a rash on his face that appears when he eats.

@spaniellove: which formula is he on?
ETA - R got hives all over her body but I don't remember if she had poop issues.

@swedishfish: The basic one, Similac Advance. I tried Similac Sensitive for a day or two but it's so frothy that he spit up all of it.

@spaniellove: R was on Similac for Supplementation, which basically IS Similac Advance, and that gave her hives. We tried a soy based formula because the pediatrician recommended it and it also gave her hives. The pediatrician switched her to Similac Alimentum and she's been great on it. Our insurance covers it too so we just have a copay.

We knew at 6 or 8 weeks, I think. She had all the classic symptoms - green/mucousy poop (and eventually some blood, which is when I started to suspect), fussiness, didn't sleep well, and a rash on both bottom and face.

Green/yellow runny poop and eczema like patches - diagnosed by ped at 14 weeks. We switched from similac advance to alimentum and the change was almost immediate. It is very watery though so it took her a bit to get used to it.

@swedishfish: Argh it sounds like I need to call the dr. I have insane food allergies and they started pretty young so I don't want to mess around.

@spaniellove: hopefully it's just an intolerance that he will grow out of!

@spaniellove: 3 months, blood in the stool. But I knew something was up before because my LO wouldn't drink, ever. I had to feed her bottles when she was dead asleep for months (she wouldn't drink while awake).

The way my doc described it is that it gradually gets worse and the last symptom is usually the blood in the poop. So first she had congestion, then mucousy poops, diaper rash, discomfort, distended belly and then at 4.5 months, blood. They can also test his stool for blood - it can't always be detected, especially early on.

@spaniellove: I started saying something wasn't right at 3 weeks and switched to soy at 4. He had horrible rash, mucus poop, and was miserable after eating. Sensitive formula made it worse.
Eta: soy was good till 3 months and then non stop puking. Switched to Neocate then.

By three weeks he had a ton of symptoms- tummy issues and diaper rash were the most obvious. I think I was hyper aware though because my first had an egg allergy so I was very vigilant about it. It sounds like it might be worth trying a new formula.

I knew at 7 days old that something was wrong. He was up and screaming all day long for 12 - 15 hours straight. It was miserable for us.

Green mucousy poop, blood in stool, eczema all around 8 weeks led us to conclude he was dairy intolerant (not an allergy - he outgrew it by 15 months.

DS1 at around 3 months and DS2 at 2 months. Both have eczema, which clued me in with my first. Eliminating the milk in my diet helped with his skin issues. DS2 had green/mucus poop with blood, spit up a lot around the clock, eczema, and recurrent diaper rash issues (that we just resolved at 7 months).
DS1 still has a milk allergy at 3 years old, but the levels are going down. There is a big chance he will outgrow it. DS2 may have an intolerance (I suspect MSPI and have eliminated soy as well) but most likely an allergy like his brother.

We didn't know until 7 months when I gave Xander some yogurt and he has a sever allergic reaction. He was EBF before and although I still drank a ton of milk, he never had much (or any) reaction to my breast milk, so I didn't know prior!
Hope you figure out the cause of your son's rash soon. It's so hard to see our babies in any sort of pain or discomfort!

I don't have any input on the allergy part of it, but when DS had awful diarrhea from constant antibiotics, we found a couple things that helped with the awful diaper rash he got. One (as recommended by the ped) was to put vaseline on at every diaper change. This helped create a protective barrier for his skin and made it more gentle when we wiped. I also found that both baking soda and oatmeal in the bath worked awesome. For the oatmeal, you can either grind it up really fine and put it in the water, or you can just put plain oats in a knotted stocking and let it sit in the tub. Warning, it makes baby very slippery. But does great things for their skin.

4 months due to bloody stools. It was probably starting at eight weeks but I ignored it until I couldn't anymore.

At 9 months when I gave her yogurt. She broke out in hives and her eye was almost swollen closed. She was EBF and has never had a problem with me having dairy.

At 4 months - he was almost EBF, but the few times I tried to supplement with formula, he projectile vomited. Also, colic-like symptoms, eczema and explosive poops even while EBFing because I didn't know and ate (and still eat!) a lot of dairy. Never any blood in the stool though. When I switched him to Similac Alimentum, it was like night and day. He outgrew his allergy at 13 months.
