I've noticed it really hurts when LO nurses on the left side for the last 2/3 days. I thought it might just have been a bad latch, but tonight I actually see a white dot on my nipple. I thought it might be a plugged duct, but googling seems to indicate a milk blister. Anyone have experience with these? Do they resolve on their own? It's so painful! I'm also traveling at the moment so don't have access to Epsom salts, grapefruit seed extract, and other things recommended for this condition. Any help or experience with this appreciated!

I got under as hot of a shower as possible, rubbed a cloth against the nipple and pinched it out. It bled a bit after it unclogged but omg it felt sooo much better after!!

Ugh, I had one a few weeks ago and it really hurt!!! I felt WAY better as soon as I got it unplugged. What worked for me was alternating hot compresses (I microwaved wet paper towels), rubbing/scrubbing with a wash cloth, baby nursing, and soaking it in a bowl of hot water. It came back one or two times before it was gone for good. Good luck! Hope you feel better soon.

Ugh they suck! Such a tiny little thing can be so painful! I had the most luck in a hot shower, scrubbing gently with a washcloth and gently scraping my nail over the dot until it dislodged. And applying pressure to the breast. Once it dislodged the milk came shooting out like a spray gun!
Picking at it with my nails or a pin did not help me and o lay made it worse!

I've had this twice with DD2. I took s sterilized needle and poked it. Immediately cleared up.
Is your boob not emptying and the pain is from engorgement? -
I had recurring milk blisters for 2 months, on both sides about 2x a week. To say it was frustrating is an understatement. Is it blocking the milk from coming out or is it just on a part of your nipple that isn't a pore? If its blocking milk, then i usually used a sterilized needle to open it up and relieve the clog. If its not blocking your milk from coming out then i would just leave it be, but switch up your nursing position on that side. I feel like it might have to do with latch and where your baby's tongue is rubbing against it, so switching up your position might help. I think they resolve on their own but mine took awhile to go away. Hopefully yours will just be a one time thing.

Thank you everyone for your replies! That was a seriously painful couple of days, but luckily it seems to have resolved itself. We were traveling, so the best I could do was microwave a wet towel and use it as a hot compress which helped with the pain. This morning, I noticed less pain, and the blister was replaced with a red spot. I just happened to have my yearly well visit with my OB today, so she was able to have a look and confirm it had been a milk blister not a plugged duct, and that it didn't look infected. Her only advice was to use lanolin after nursing. Some sources online say there's a link with saturated fat in the diet, but my doctor said she hasn't heard that.
@SleepyMonkey: oh god, the idea of these recurring is a nightmare! great advice about switching up positions, I'll remember that.

Ugh, and it's back. I knew it was too good to be true when it went away relatively easily.
I'm afraid to do anything with a needle, but I've been using a hot compress all day. Tomorrow I'll probably start experimenting with saline/Epsom soaks, cotton balls soaked in vinegar or olive oil, and all the other crazy remedies Dr Google seems to recommend!

i think i had gotten a little lazy and went back to nursing in an old position and forgotten to take lecithin. I take lecithin 4x a day and use motherlove nipple cream after every feed. I do side lying position instead of cradle hold. I used a needle yesterday to open it up. Is it blocking your milk? If not, don't use the needle. No need to.

They are the worst! I have been dealing with one on and off for 2 months now. My advice is to take lecithin too, also be very careful regarding your latch on that breast. Try saline soak and rubbing olive oil on that nipple. My nurse told me to do that four times a day. Finding time to do them is another story altogether. Also try dry heat like a rice sock. I didn't take care of it as much as I should have. Now I'm super sensitive on that breast and I get shooting pain on them when my milk comes in:(

I had a milk blister + recurring plugged ducts, so my LC recommended lecithin. I've gotten one plugged duct since starting lecithin, but it cleared up right away with just nursing.
