There’s only one NAEYC approved preschool in my town and it’s kinda on the opposite side of town. The others by me aren’t NAEYC approved, do you think that matters?

I don't think it HAS to matter, since the school has to actually pursue the NAEYC accreditation and jump through the hoops. It is reassuring to me to know that my girls' school cares enough to pursue it and uphold the standards, but I think you could have an equally good school that just never pursued NAEYC and a NAEYC school where the teachers are less caring. So personally, I would visit the schools with some questions in mind and decide for yourself.

I think it just depends. Naecy means they have high standards they have met and continue to have because they are evaluated yearly. One of the most important to us was lower ratios. But it doesn't mean all non accredited centers are bad. You have to check into the ones you are interested in and ask questions about stuff that is important to you.

@stormborn: we are in a naeyc school. We are really happy overall and it was a plus in our decision making. BUT there are other good programs in our area and this one is convenient to us. And we have had our struggles so it is not a guarantee of no issues. I would look at the naeyc standards in terms of what matters most to you (for us it was things like ratios, teacher training) and what else matters like philosophy which is not accreditation dependent. It was really important to me for our kids to be in a play-based program rather that super academic. We have gotten that play focus but lots of academic readiness in an age appropriate way at the same time. Good luck—it is a big decision!

My daughter’s daycare has the naeyc accreditation but my son’s daycare wasn’t. My son’s was a much fancier daycare (all organic food, cloth diapering, all head teachers had masters in early childhood education, etc) and was a ton more expensive. I actually preferred my son’s daycare since the teachers were much more qualified, communication was better, etc. I know these are just two examples but it makes me think naeyc isn’t that big of a deal of you find the right place.
