My breastfed baby is 9 days old and sp far has majorly puked about 5x. Not like a little bit of spit up - major puking that comes out her nose and mouth at the same time. She did it yesterday while getting neeborn photos, and both the photographer and my sister (who have kids if their own) said they'd never seen anything like it. My sister said it was an "adult-sized" amount of puke and that's probably accurate. Maybe 6-8 oz??? She seems fine afterwards and immediately starts rooting again. I feel like maybe she isn't refulated how much she's eatiing? When she was 4 days old, I took her to a breastfeeding support group and she ate 3.2 oz in about about 20 min. That time she just nursed in one side, but often she nurses fri both. It seemed like that amount was more than other babies her age were consing during the group.
The lactation consultant told me no pacifier until 4 weeks, but I'm worried LO might be nursing for comfort and not understanding how to suck without taking in too much. Should I not feed on demand? Use a pacifier when she's rooting? She will suck on her hands, but she prefers the pacifier.
If it's not overfeeding, I'm thinking it's reflux? She occasionally will cough/choke a little bit, like milk when down the wrong way or something came up.
Anyone have experience with this?
ETA: before she puked yesterday, she nursed for 20 min at 8am, took 3oz of BM via bottle (because I was wearing a non-nursing friendly dress for photos) at 10am and the nursed on both sides at 11:30. I only fed her each time because she was fussing and rooting. She puked around 11:45-12.
