Is it okay to wake a 3 month old to feed them? This wasn't a problem a few days ago, but lately, Xander has been sleeping through the night and not waking up at his usual 4:30/5:00 a.m. wake-up. So the past few days, I've actually gone in and woken him up to feed him (I can't really wait for him to wake up - I have to get to work). Do you think it's okay that I'm waking him up to eat? He eats a decent amount when I wake him and then goes right back to sleep. Thoughts?

I think the only issue with that would be him getting used to it and waking you up on the weekends when you want to sleep in.

@artbee: haha, as much as I'd love to sleep in on the weekends, if that's my only issue, I'm okay with it! I just wasn't sure if it's BAD to be waking him up every morning to feed him...

@Adira: I really don't know, I've never done it. LO has slept 12 hours through the night since 2 1/2 months, and luckily I'm a SAHM so I can let her.

@Adira: I don't think it's bad. It sounds like he is getting a good amount of sleep, so no worries there. And while 3 months is young to STTN--but LUCKY YOU!--as long as he is having plenty of wet diapers and is gaining just fine, I don't think you need to worry about his feeds either. Way to go mama!

@MsLipGloss: Thanks! I mean, he definitely complains when I wake him up, but once I start feeding him, he seems happy and falls right back to sleep. And he's still been perfectly happy and playful at daycare, so I don't think it's bothering him too much. I just wasn't sure if it was okay that I do it!

@Adira: I have the opposite problem . . . my LO *complains* when I put her down! hahaha It sounds like you have things under control.
Out of curiosity, have you ever let him sleep through just to see how much longer he would sleep?

@Adira: He is either going through a growth spurt or he might be adjusting his sleep schedule. Either way, I wouldn't wake him. I would just pump and leave the bottle for DH or daycare to give him.

@MamaMoose: I don't mind waking him up - I just feel bad for him because he seems to be sleeping so soundly and then in I come, picking him up and changing his diaper!

@BabyBoecksMom: I was thinking about doing that, but I'm not sure Hubs has time to feed him in the morning before bringing him to daycare, and I'd hate for him to wake up starving only an hour later or something and there's no food for him until he gets to daycare at 7:30. Hmmm...

I think it's fine. Supposedly they'll wake up when they wake up no matter what you do to bedtime, so if you need to feed him before you leave, he eats well, and then goes back to sleep, I don't see a problem. Unless like others have said, you're not OK with him starting to wake at that time on weekends too.

@ladyfingers: Thanks!! I really just wanted confirmation that what I'm doing is okay, because I really need to feed him before I go to work and I can't really wait around for him to just wake up, haha. I mean, until recently, he was waking up even earlier than I'm waking up, so I was never having to wake him up before. It's just this week (starting Monday) that he's been sound asleep when I woke up at 5:00! Usually he's making me get up at 4:30 or something to feed him!

I have always been a believer in never waking a sleeping baby. If he needs to eat he will wake up...I'm on my 3rd kid and no one is malnourished lol
However, if you HAVE to feed him before you go to work and you can't pump/send a bottle for him then you gotta do what you gotta do. -
@Pumpkinspice: Well, I could pump and send an extra bottle to daycare, but he wouldn't get it until around 7:30, and I'm not sure if he could make it that long (I currently feed him at 5:00). I mean, maybe he could, but I feel like it might be more mean to force him to wait (especially if he woke up hungry at 6:00 or something) than to just wake him to eat.

@Adira: Only you know your schedule. Does your DH not have time to feed him between 6 and 7 if he would need it? Or do you have to take care of that before you go to work?

@Pumpkinspice: I guess technically Hubs could probably feed him if he got up earlier for work. Not sure he'd do it though, haha. It's certainly easier if I just do it!

@Adira: Well, I don't know the dynamic in your home for caring for the baby but in my house who ever doesn't work/works later than the other is the one in charge of the night/early morning feeding.
We take turns so that one of us isn't always exhausted.
If he would just need to get up for work a little early to make things easier then that would probably be the best bet. IMO -
@Pumpkinspice: I definitely hear what you're saying and I agree, but my husband can be a big baby when he doesn't get enough sleep, and I seem to be able to function better on less! So who knows! I'm also a little worried that I wouldn't be able to pump enough for both his morning bottle AND extra (usually I nurse, get ready for work, and then pump to get milk for the next day). Though I guess I'll never know if I don't try, haha.

@Adira: I also don't breastfeed so pumping isn't a worry of mine so that's something else you would have to consider that I wouldn't have experience with. Either way, I hope you are able to find the right solution.
