As a nanny, I won't give mine until the interview. Since they aren't an office phone at a company, they are someone's private info, I think they should be shared sparingly. On a lot of websites that nanny jobs are posted on there is no way to varify the family hiring isn't some pyscho killer and is in fact a family hiring a nanny, so I hold on to mine until we've met & I'm interested in the job. I love the families I've worked for too much to give their personal info to just anyone : )

After. I would only call refs if I liked the candidate.

@mrs. bird: @Andrea: is it weird that one person gave me her resume and has all the contact info for her jobs? her resume is weird too.... my resume is like a typical business resume. are nannies' resumes different? she has her objective, then in her experience, she doesn't bullet point what she did, she gave a brief summary and then posted i guess a "review" of what her employers wrote about her. weird.

@tequiero21: That is a strange resume. I've submitted letters of recommendations with my nanny resume which is standard in the LA nanny market, but no reviews were left on the resume.
And typically nannies give their references after both parties decide to move forward post-interview.

@calsmom: that's what i thought was the "normal" thing to do, but she wanted me to check out her references before we met? i already want to cancel our interview. ugh.

@tequiero21: I think there are plenty of nannies who share their references before the interview. I've had people request them first, but I've just explained my reason for wanting to wait and people have understood. As for the weird resume, I think she probably just doesn't know how to write one.

@mrs. bird: the school i went to taught us that resumes are VERY important because that is essentially how people weed through candidates before interviewing. i think it's the first thing you should work on before you interview for a job. thing is, on her facebook, looks like she's a doula and everything. i don't know. something definitely doesn't smell right. but she was matched pretty well on care.com.

@tequiero21: I'm totally with you on the importance of presenting yourself in a professional way, on my performance evaluation one year, the only negative comment was that they felt like they didn't know me well outside work- that they never felt like they knew what I was doing that weekend and that they had no idea my ex had moved out... Ummm, I thought it was a good thing to keep your personal life out of your work? Haha. But for some people, I think informality with their nanny helps them feel closer & more comfortable. So sharing weekend plans and writing unprofessional resumes might suit some people. Different strokes for different folks : )

@tequiero21: it sounds to me like she doesn't know how to write a resume but I think 90% of people don't!

The thing with references is that if they are given to you by the nanny, they are, of course, only going to be the most glowing reviews.
