Baby Avivoca has recently taken to solids after several weeks of hit or miss. I started sending a pouch or jar of food with her to daycare since we sometimes can't get a solid meal in after we get home. I noticed that on the days she eats solids at daycare (either the whole pouch or the whole jar), her daycare teacher doesn't feed her her third bottle. Is this what you are supposed to do? Everything I have read says to not replace milk feedings with solids this early. She is 7 months old and we try to get in one solid meal a day.

Solids shouldn't take the place of the bottles. Especially at that age. When are they doing the solids? Might need to space it differently.
I will add around 8 months R was on 3 solids a day, and did drop from 5 to 4 bottles, but that was per her pedi. She wanted her on that schedule by 8 months. So we started feeding every 2 hours, bottle, solid, bottle, solid, etc.
But one solid I don't think should be dropping a bottle.

@avivoca: I would look at her overall oz for the day. I think when they start eating a good amount of solids, they are full longer so they can go a longer time between bottles.
My almost 10 month old is down to 2 bottles at daycare most days (if we feed her 1 bottle at home in the morning first). She goes to daycare at 8 and her first bottle is around 11, solids at 1, bottle at 3-3:30 ish.
At first, I think my LO would get confused by the full feeling. Like, if she ate solids she would refuse her second bottle and wouldn't eat again until almost 5 pm, which would mess up our night time bottle at 7 pm.
But I guess because she's older and can take in more, she's back to her normal schedule.

Once we started solids, LO decreased the amount of milk she was drinking. She takes the same number of bottles per day, but fewer ounces in total.

@Smurfette: They usually do it around noon. She eats at home (milk) at 6:30-7:00, usually has a bottle between 9:30 and 10:30, and they give her the solids at lunch (12ish). Then she gets another bottle between 2:30 and 3:00, and my husband picks her up at daycare at 4:00.

@avivoca: At 7 months old I would not replace milk with solids. Most purees have no fat and very little calories. We're at 9 months and LO's milk intake has not decreased. I'd rather her drink all of her BM and not eat many solids than the other way around.

For reference, I have been sending 12 oz. per day to daycare. For the past few nights, she has been snacking all. night. long. and waking up every hour to nurse.

@avivoca: Looks like you have it spaced out fine. Will she just not drink it? If not does she want the next bottle earlier?

@avivoca: Maybe you could ask them to just give her half the pouch or jar? I'm not sure how many oz are in those.

@Smurfette: I don't know. I'll have to ask tomorrow. Her teacher isn't always there at drop-off, but I'll find out from someone. He picks her up at 4:00, then they come to get me at 5:00. We usually get home between 5:45 and 6:00 and she eats as soon as we get home, and then again before bed (7:30).

@avivoca: What time do you normally drop her off? Maybe you could have the solid meal be breakfast? So you could feed her milk at home at 6:30-7, then she could have a solid meal at daycare right when you drop her off, then the rest of her bottles at the normal times?

@avivoca: So she will go 1030 to 600 without a bottle? I would cut the solids if she isn't getting a bottle between that time.

When Xander started solids at daycare, I asked them specifically to give him his solids an hour after a bottle so as not to interfere with his milk intake. So his day usually looked like 9:00 a.m. bottle, 12:00 bottle, 1:00 solids, 3:00 bottle. Sometimes he wouldn't finish that last bottle, but he still was getting the majority of his milk that he was originally getting!
What time were they offering bottles before? You should ask them to space out the solids between bottles so she's not skipping a bottle.

@avivoca: what if you do solids right when you get home? Then nurse her before bed.

@Smurfette: No, she goes 10:30-2:30 without a bottle. If I do solids when we get home, I nurse, she eats her solids, and we still nurse before bed. That's why I was conflicted.

@avivoca: 1030-230 without a bottle is fine. I thought that you said she goes without a 230 bottle if you do solids.

@avivoca: What happens if she gets her first bottle at 9:30 instead? Does she end up getting all three bottles?
My other suggestion would be adding milk to the bottles she does take - will she finish them if there is more milk? That might help make sure she's getting what she needs.

So if i'm understanding correctly you are sending 12 oz in 3 bottles (4oz each) and she's only eating 2 of those. What would happen if you put more ounces in 2 bottles like 5-6 oz each. Would she finish them?

@Chillybear: I'll have to try that. I have a few 8oz bottles, but I've never put more ounces in them. In the past when I've tried that (back when she was eating 3 oz. per bottle), she either finished it all and spit up a bunch or didn't finish them. She started taking more ounces once she signaled that she needed them (around 5 months).
