I wasn't planning on starting solids with rice cereal but I will be...the ped suggested mixing some into a bottle. Did you feed rice cereal through a bottle or did you spoon feed it?

@swedishfish: Yep, just a few days ago. He looooves it! I was shocked how much he took to it. We started it super runny with breastmilk (4 tablespoons bm, 1 tablespoon cereal). Did that for 2 nights, then tonight we tried it a little thicker (2 to 1) and he liked that even more. Solids are fun, so far

@Pepper: ah, that's great! I'm considering starting this weekend but I might chicken out.

@swedishfish: Was there a reason your doctor suggested putting cereal in the bottle? I've heard it as a way to combat reflux, but it's not generally recommended as a way to feed solids. Baby can't regulate their intake this way.

@kiddosc: I have no idea. R has some reflux but it's normal reflux for her age. This is a group of pediatricians that DH went to as a child (even though all of his doctors have long since retired). He is insistent that R go there too which I don't understand. Every time I try to bring up going somewhere different he gets upset. I'll have to show him this article though, thanks!!
ETA - she is on hypoallergenic formula for her supplementing because she had allergic reactions to milk based formula. I don't think that would have anything to do with putting rice cereal in a bottle though?

@swedishfish: I'm on my phone, so I can't look it up, but the article mentions it's an AAP recommendation. You might want to find the actual AAP release to show him. I know my DH would want to see something like that rather than a random website.

It's not recommended to put it in a bottle. It can lead to childhood obesity!

We haven't started yet (waiting for the high hair to be delivered) but we plan to use a spoon.

We did oatmeal in a spoon. If you're doing it to start solids, giving it on a spoon would be good practice for your lo. If you're doing it for reflux then a bottle makes more sense (although research that because there's lots out there saying that isn't recommended anymore)

We used a spoon, but Sadie never really liked it. I tried a couple different times, but she wasn't into it. Now, I just use it to mix into some of Sadie's fruit/veggie purees. I use the Gerber DHA + probiotic cereal (http://www.gerber.com/supportedsitter/products/cereals/dha_probiotic_cereal_rice.aspx).
My SIL put the cereal in my nephews bottle to help with his reflux and he was never overweight, and as a 2-year-old he's nowhere near obese. He's actually small for his age! Bottle or spoon, you just have to pay attention to how much you're giving in a day!

Ditto to what @kiddosc said, our pedi said it wasn't a good idea to put in his bottle ever. I know it's a popular old school method though, we had dozens of older family members swearing he's STTN if we did (we never did rice cereal but LOs sleep or worse for a while when we starte solid at 6m bc his tummy was upset)!

@Pepper: we just did it! We fed her a few spoonfuls and she liked it! I'm going to make it a little thicker tomorrow.

@swedishfish: Awesome!!! This is so exciting! I can't WAIT to start solids and see what she thinks of it! E was born at the tail end of our birth month and I know she isn't quite ready yet but it doesn't stop me getting excited!!

@swedishfish: beware she may not poop for days lol. Rice cereal seems to have that effect on babies. Just a heads up so you're not surprised
