I'm a SAHM to a 19.5 month old. After reading some of the blog posts about preschool, I started looking at our preschool options. It seems like most start around age 3. Just wondering what other SAHMs do? I'm in no hurry to send her to school but I'm wondering if the extra structure and stimulation would be good for her...

We will apply next year for the following year (so starting 2015). He will be almost 3 (turns 3 that oct).

Yes---but only half days. Our preschool starts at 2.5 years old.
I am going to still be home with another LO though (if all goes according to plan), so I won't be home alone.
I plan to be back into work by the time kindergarten rolls around. -
She started preschool at 3. I think it's great for her. She has no interest in staying home with me and baby sis. She asks me if school is open yet every morning so I know she is excited to go!

Probably at 3 ish for a few half days per week. Then maybe another day added the year before kindergarten. If we're involved in lots of other activities I'd consider just doing one year of preschool.

I am not a sahm, but my kids stay home with Grandma. I sent my daughter to preschool just before she turned 3. She went 3 hours a day, 3 days a week.
Now she goes 3 hours a day, 5 days a week.

@hilsy85: I was reading through urban baby forums on schools and getting really scared! DD was born in June, so I need to figure out my timeline and get a move on researching. I'm nervous that there is so much riding on it.

Maybe 3? But considering a mother's morning out program if we have another LO so that I have some one-on-one time with that baby..although right now we aren't even preg, so what do I know?

We're still waiting for our LO to arrive, but the plan at this stage will be 2.5-3. We would like them to attend Montessori school and the two schools locally do not have an infant class.

@pinkcupcake: My DS just entered a preschool program in September. He is 2.7 now. He attends school 3 mornings per week, from 9a until 11:30. He loves it. His speech exploded and he is really settling down.

It really depends on the child. My first definitely needed the stimulation, social interaction, and structure of preschool. We sent her at 2.5 yo and have no regrets!
[This was also in NYC and I didn't find the admissions process too tough at all! Perhaps we were lucky though as our neighborhood had a ton of young families (UWS), and rather than having issues of overcrowding, a few new preschools opened up and we got into a great program pretty easily!]
Our 2nd child is doing just fine at home and I honestly don't even think she needs preschool (2-3 program). I can very well see how she will be prepared for pre-K at age 4. She goes on play dates regularly, follows instructions well, knows her ABCs, shapes, numbers and colors... She learns a TON from her sister.

It seems like a lot of people have enrolled their kids in preschool this year. I plan on waiting until next year when he is 3. The program is 3 days a week for only a few hours. I could probably hold out for another year, but I think DS really wants to go to school.

We started at a little over 2 for multiple reasons: I have a younger LO and solo parent a lot so it gives me some one-on-one time with the baby plus some time to do stuff while he naps, all our neighbors and playdates started school so we needed more social interaction, but mostly, because he was ready! He absolutely loves everything about school.

Three would be the absolute earliest I would consider preschool, and even then, I wouldn't do more than two days per week in a two to three hour session tops. Ideally, we'd wait until four, but we'll see how things go. Personally, I don't really agree with this big push for formalised education to begin as early as possible, I'd like for my children to enjoy their time as children for as long as possible.

I'm a SAHM who will not be putting my LO or his future sibling in preschool. We can't afford it. In its place I bring him to a lot of mommy and me play groups and free storytime activities. We go on long walks and I try to stay involved in his learning. I know this will be more challenging when I have another but I'm gonna do my best.

LO is 21 months old and we are thinking of starting in the next couple of months. We would only send her 3 mornings a week to start with.

We will start sending him to preschool when he is about 3.5, which is the earliest that many schools will take him because of his birthday. We plan to do a toddler program for the next couple of years, though (essentially mommy and me playgroups at the preschools once or twice per week).

I SAH/WAH. DS started 1/2 day preschool just after he turned 2. He started full day preschool this fall, so a little over 2.5.

She can't start preschool here until she's 3, but our system combines daycare and preschool (starting at age 1 to 5 yrs). Preschool's in the same facility, so essentially, there's no real difference from daycare, it's just that the bigger kids get extra lessons on the side. It's just a couple of hours a week, but it's more structured.
We've signed-up DD for daycare and if there's room, she'll start when she's 20 months old.
