I just stopped offering and offered a cup of milk instead. He wasn't crazy about the idea, but he didn't put up a huge fight either. We still nursed right before bed, but he started losing interest pretty quickly and stopped on his own around 14 months.

ETA: as for reducing pumping sessions, I reduced the number of sessions by half and then only pumped long enough so that I was comfortable, not long enough to empty the breast. My body was always pretty responsive to supply/demand, so it was only a few weeks before I could stop all together.

@MarieJ: I know you don't want to hear this but we are having a very difficult time trying to wean. I now have a 16 month old who nurses in the AM/PM and at any overnight wakeups. I have tried offering sippy cups of water or milk and she tosses them across them room. I've tried sending my husband in and she screams her head off until I come in.

I think w'ere going to have to go with the scream method soon. Send hubby in, he comforts her best he can until she falls asleep. It's going to be tough. I hope someone can offer you some better advice!!

DD is also not a fan of whole milk and doing exactly what yours is. DD will be 1 in 5 days and I don't know if we will be completely weaned but I started by dropping her midday feedings which actually went really smoothly. I just waited for her to ask for it and she never did. She still gets one bottle in the middle of the day of formula because I stopped pumping (which is awesome!). This morning I thought she had dropped the morning nursing because she spent a few minutes walking around and petting the dogs instead of lunging directly for the boob but she ultimately wanted to nurse.

@MarieJ: ah, gotcha. I mixed. I started with 1/4 whole milk and 3/4 breastmilk or formula (when I didn't pump enough). Have you tried mixing it yet? I did that mixture for a week, then went half and half and then went full whole milk and she was okay with it. I also started giving cold bottles at that point.

I would also do sippy cups (straw cups) of the same mixture at meals.

I want to wean my daughter by her 1st birthday too, which is about two more months. I have been thinking of ways to prep her for it, so far failed :-(. I EBF her for 10 months without bottles. She became a straw cup pro at 8 months, we put water in it, not much Just 2-3oz. I return to the office and decided to use the freezer stash for her day time consumption. She hates it, she doesn't like thawed BM! Warm, cold or room temp, would not.take it. That was with the straw.cup. well with that she'll slurp some and then let it driZzle back out from her mouth. We tried.the.bottle and she would. Chew on the nipple like it's a.teething toy. So now I wonder how will I get her to drink cow's milk if she wouldn't even drink thawed BM. She only wants the boobies. I actually don't mind too much BF over a year but we have plans to have a second baby and AF haven't returned yet. Btw, I haven't pumped since her 3rd month. My first day back in the office, I went 9 hours without nursing/pump...felt like I was going to explode. Right now our schedule is I nurse her right before work, and as soon as I get home, and she doesn't STTN, so she nurses from 5-7 times at night, and screams if she doesn't get it. Screams louder if hubby holds her. I work from home every other day so the boobies are pretty smart in adjusting the milk production. Sorry MarieJ, not much help from me. I need just as much help/advice. Got a tough weaning journey ahead of me!

@MarieJ- yes! There were times where she was really just comfort nursing, other times she does seem to get a good amount of milk, I felt several let downs during each session. Her diaper is super soaked, I try to sneak in diaper changes when I think she's in dream land lol. She's been waking up 5-7 Times since 7 months? So it's been like this every night for 3 months. .. and honestly I'm exhausted! I kept reading info to see if I can wean her from the night sessions, but now that I've returned to work, I'm happy to nurse her at night to make up for the daytime. Just not sure how I'll ever wean her now. Hugs to you too! And lots of luck to both of us! Btw, we can give cow's milk before 12 months? I was going to ask the doc if we can supplement some kind of milk where it be cow's milk or almond milk since DD refuses my freezer stash. Btw, has your period returned? I heard some got theirs back if they go certain hours without nursing, I guess going 9 hours didn't work. Some have to completely night wean for it to return. I'll keep you posted along the way if this weaning process is working nicely as planned

I dropped pump sessions and switched to formula at 8 months. He was ready for it by that by then. We had an easy transition. It was harder to get him to switch to sippy cups and whole milk.

@MarieJ: I don't even mind breast feeding so much, we are just really ready for baby number 2 and I don't think I'm ovulating consistently while EBFing. Lame. I wish I could be as lucky as the bees that breasted and still had healthy baby #2 (:

24 months and still nursing. i want to wean!!!!

I feel like there are so many of us wanting to wean but we don't know how/ our LOs aren't ready.

DS is almost 11 months and I want to wean at a year but he is such a boob monster. I don't know what to do or how to go about it. I want my body back and want to remember what it's like to not have milk filled boobs!!

the older they are the harder they are to wean, especially when they're talking and can ask for it. i wish i had weaned before 18 months, but oh well... it certainly made our summer travels much easier.

i'm going to try the lemon juice or vinegar on the boobs trick and see if that works!

I have a feeling I will also struggle with this...I have also created a monster where LO nurses to sleep for naps. Wah He's still nursing 5x a day at 1 year...

This link has a lot of references on how to wean from the pump and how to wean your little one. I started dropping pumping sessions when the twins were 9 months old. Since it is supply/demand I got the same amount of milk with 2 pumps/day as I was getting with 3 pumps/day. I had a serious stash so I weaned another pump when they were 11 months old and then the last pump daily when they were 11.5 months old. That helped me feel comfortable. at 15 months now they just nurse from the tap when I am around.
