Uggh. So annoying. It's all just preconceived notions of what "normal" is!

I hate it when people says like that. It's none of their business. My usual response to comments/questions like this is "Well, actually, these days, the recommendation is..." or "Actually, my doctor says...". Most of the time, these comments are from older people so I just tell them their info is wrong.

I got alot of comments when I was on an elimination diet while BF-ing (my family was "concerned" but actually just annoyed that they couldn't go out to eat with us and that I needed special foods). They told me it was healthier for me and LO to wean but I said "No, actually the doctor said..." and then they shut up about it.

Massive eye roll. The older my baby gets, the more people ask me sort of surprised, "you are still nursing?" When I go to pump at work. They always say good for you, but I get the feeling the older he gets (8.5m now) the less supportive they will be of me needing to take my breaks at certain times. Maybe not, and we all are supposed to take the two breaks at my work, so it's not like I even have to tell anyone I am pumping.

No one flat it said you should wean, but I got a lot of "so how do you think you'll keep that up? Or, she doesn't really need it now, you know. Mostly asking when I planned to stop though.

At first I was really unsure when I was going to wean and what we would do, and that's when I got more negative comments. Once i decided that I would continue as long as it was working for us and that I hoped she would self wean, and confidently told that to anyone who asked, people started accepting that and asking fewer questions.

Shortly after lo turned 1, my mil was like "she has teeth now" big whatevs though! Lo is 17 months and we're still going strong

mmm... Any sentence that includes "You should..." I basically tune out immediately.

I don't get why people make it their business when it doesn't affect them, but honestly I don't understand when people get upset by the comments either. If you're comfortable in the decisions made for your kids, then it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. Maybe I have just become exceptionally good at not giving a shiz from dealing with a mom for 29 years whose every other sentence starts with "you should..."

I wouldn't probably say this to mixed company (although I said it to my mom pretty much), but I would DEFINITELY think it.

Oh yes. I was so annoyed with my mm for saying that if my daughter could ask to nurse (at 13 months) she was too old to be doing it, and as a result have decided not to share that she has since chosen to wean. I would have nursed a lot longer if it were up to me.

@ms. pug: wow, that sounds like harrassment! I'd tell him to back off and then talk to HR if it continues.

I would have said "you're 65, you should know better than to comment on other people's personal decisions".

@ms. pug: That is way out of line and needs to be reported to your HR department.

definitely the longer i nursed, the more comments i got. same with wearing my toddler.

I got a lot of "oh, you're STILL nursing?" from Hubs' family. Starting at 6 months. I felt like saying, "Oh, you're STILL an asshole?" Eff off, people. MYODB.

I find that many people find it acceptable to judge all sorts of aspects of motherhood - weaning, how many kids to have, daycare vs no daycare...I am sick of it. If it is not polite to comment on how someone should lose 15 pounds or how someone should get a nose job or Botox, then why do they think it is polite to criticize someone's decision about weaning??!??!
