Anyone mastered it and have tips? I just can't seem to get the hang of it--Especially when LO has to switch sides. She wakes up, because I actually switch her to the other side of my body, instead of just switching boobs.

I tried ONCE and decided against it. It was so awkward and I think even LO was confused. LOL. My friend does it and I think she just kept on trying and trying until it became a regular thing.

I side lie breast feed. I usually lie on my left side and give Lo left boob first. When I switch, I turn my body more to the left and am half on my side/tummy. Wish I could video myself and show u!

if i mastered it, i would have been cosleeping long ago. although passing out in the glider with her every night is kinda cosleeping anyway....

Great post! I would love some tips on this, it has been so hard I haven't been able to make it work for more than a few minutes yet.

I lay on my side with my arm pointed in a wide v at my side - my elbow is pointed towards the top of the bed, my hand is face down at my side Her head goes in the crook of my elbow and she lays on her side too. kinda like this on page 2 http://kidshealth.org/parent/pregnancy_newborn/breastfeed/nursing_positions.html#

It took me awhile to master, but I finally got it and did it frequently until Liv was old enough to sit up. So I will lay on my left side and give my left boob. I would lay liv on her side, facing me, and hold her head with my free hand against the bed (so really she was laying on my hand, or it would support the back of her head.) I had to use no pillows. Id lay with my left arm bent and use my arm as a pillow. That helped with the angle. When she needed to switch, I climed over her to the other side and gently rolled her over. She usually stayed asleep because Id cuddle her close in the transfer. So even if she did wake, she'd be like "sa-weet. Snuggles (thats what I imagine her thinking anyways)" and fall back to sleep. Eventually she got old enough to lay on her side unsupported and hold on to my boob while she nursed. that or she would lay on her back with her head turned to the side.
Keep trying it. It took me awhile to get. It always felt so awkward, but one day it kinda just clicked. It didnt do that until she was a little older. Maybe aorund a month or two?

This is my favorite way to breastfeed! I have really large boobs, though, so that might make it easier- no propping or anything necessary. I usually moved to her other side instead of moving her to my other side, but I generally didn't switch sides when breastfeeding- she got all of one and got the other one the next time.

My LO and I figured it out around 4 weeks. I would lay on my left side with my left arm under my head and turn LO slightly on his side, and he would latch on. I had huge breasts, so sometimes I had to hold my breast, or wedge something (try a diaper) underneath my breast so it doesn't fall out of his mouth. When I'm ready to switch sides, I actually get up and lay down on his other side, so that I don't really have to move him. It works much better than rolling with him - which I had done before and he really didn't like!
@Rock n Roll: really? I found it difficult with big breasts lol but I guess I don't know how it would be smaller breasts either.
My sister is a C since having her LO and she is able to do it.

At first, side laying was the only way I could get my daughter to latch on! I thought it was easier with big boobs because I could manipulate my boob to fit in her mouth easier I guess. (Basically I could bring the nipple to her instead of having to bring her to the nipple.)

I suck at it. Although I've been more successful with this one, I think because she's a better nurser all around. I only bother when I'm rather desperate for one more hour of sleep, as I'm not a co-sleeping fan (not in general, just for me. I like space to sleep).

This is the only way we breastfeed. The first month or two I would nurse DS where he was sitting up (literally he was vertical) because of his reflux, but as the back arching got worse I couldn't hold on to him and nurse. I've been doing it this way for 10+ months! Love it. I usually move myself and not DS when we switch sides and my arms are usually up because I'm surfing HB with my phone :). I can also nurse both breasts without switching myself or DS to the other side but that is more awkward. For that I usually have to have my arms above my head for that to be more comfortable.

Finally tried the side lie and as awkward as it was, I definitely get why it's a must! Zoey just pops herself off and is already lying down fast asleep. I got an extra hour of sleep this AM! Yay!

I'm still working on the side-laying position, but we mastered breastfeeding while I lay on my back- best thing ever! Took us 17 weeks, but I can finally feed and nap a little while laying down instead of sitting up in the recliner.
I've tried it in the past, but he just kept popping off. The other day I was laying on the couch on my back, he was having tummy time on my belly and got hungry, so I tried latching him and it worked!
Usually on the couch I put him on the side closest to the back of the couch and lean that way just a little (keeps him from rolling off). Lay him belly down on my belly, along the leg on the side he is feeding on. And latch- he just pops off after he is done, and I can doze a little.

@Mrs. Bee: haha ditto!!! That's what I did.
I tried all the breastfeeding positions, and the classic was by far the most comfortable for me.

Ha, and since I posted last week I started feeding her in bed for the 5am feed and just keeping her there. What can I say? It was cold in our room at my parents house.

@Rock n Roll: @Coco Bee: I have small breasts & this works really well for me
lo & I started doing this when she was a month old & it made life sooooo much easier. we co sleep now & we both sleep much better.
I'll start out laying on one side (let's say the left) & have that same are stretched out straight. I wedge a long (king sized) pillow under my back side - from my shoulders down to under my hips & lean back on it - not lying flat on my back, but really just enought to give my hips some support. then I snuggle her up against me & curl one leg up for her to have her feet on & keep the other one stretched out. she'll usually eat with her arm thrown over the top of my breast & when she's done, she'll unlatch & lay her cheek on the side of my breast that's facing up & basically use it as a pillow. it's really sweet.
to switch sides, I usually have to move both of us, but like @LivsMama, when I do move her it's b/c we're about to eat again, so if she does wake up, she usually goes right back to sleep, no big deal.

it definitely leads to co-sleeping, whether you want to or not, who can stay awake while laying and breastfeeding. For this reason i have a love-hate relationship with the position, as I am trying not to bed share

@cvbee: I am learning that now. I kind of don't mind the morning feed/co-sleep, but Z is going through her 4 month sleep regression, which means that she has been waking up anywhere from 3am -5am. Much more co-sleeping than when she was waking at 6am and we would get an extra hour or two of sleep. It's got me wondering how good an idea it is to do this.

@miranlee: ha. I continue to accidentally co-sleep during/after side-laying breastfeeding at least 4 times a week, usually around 4am.
