Is there any particular risk with feeding babies strawberries? My LO is 8 months and I was going to give him some puree in it but I've read that it's a food babies are more allergic to. We have no family history of allergies and he hasn't had reactions to any foods yet (other than dairy, but it's an intolerance, not an allergy).

It's more of a common allergy so some peds tell you to hold off. Ours told us to wait on all berries for one year so we did.

I think I had read that that's one that you want to wait until 12 months for. Why 12 months is the magic number, I have no idea.

I have seen this places too, but our pediatrician didn't tell us not to and only told us to wait on nuts, honey, and egg whites. We've been giving our DS strawberries since 9 months. Also, I always wondered why they made baby food with strawberries if you weren't supposed to give it to them until 1?

@creativemomma15: Well, it's technically not a baby food it's called "Wunder Puree" - straight up pureed fruit - and they make a few flavors - one is kiwi strawberry

I have given P some banana and strawberry baby food. Didn't know it was a no-no!

We gave LO purees of apples and strawberries, and I have also given her a frozen strawberry in the mesh thing. LO is also 8 months.

We got the go-ahead for berries today. C is 9 months old. They only told us to wait on nuts/PB.
She'shad blueberries before and LOVES them.

@winniebee: Oh okay... I am pretty sure I have a pouch of baby food (8m+) that has strawberries in it too. Maybe it is BRU brand?

The aap has changed the recommendation for all things except honey to 6 months to 2 years given there hasn't been a history of allergy in the family.

You could try a yogurt first if you like since it'll be a processed berry which isn't a "potent". We give P strawberry yogurt (coconut milk yogurt) all the time & haven't seen any issue.

@creativemomma15: I read something from Beechnut saying that there is a kind of heat pasteurization they use for the strawberries that kills whatever the allergens that are in them. So I think that's why it's different for them to have it in baby food than raw.
