I know that thawed milk from the freezer is only supposed to be good for 24 hours... but how long have you gone before? I hate throwing out potentially good milk and I can make sure he has it first thing in the morning, but is giving it after 24 hours a bad idea?

I never broke that rule. I always used mine within 18 hours or sooner.

For whatever reason, my milk seems to go bad way before it's "supposed" to! I learned this the hard way. If you think it could go a little longer than the rule, I'd just smell/taste test it every so often and see.

I use it within 48 hours and have never had a problem. I really don't like wasting milk!

Maybe I'll save it in the fridge for now and if it seems still good in the morning, I'll still use it.

@Adira: I'd do first thing in the morning. That's actually the plan for us, as LO skipped his second bottle today!

We use it first thing in the morning unless it's been warmed. Then I skip a feeding and give the bottle.

@cmomma17: Okay, that's what I was thinking! Xander refused one of his sippy cups (I'm weaning him off bottles) today, so that's why I have it left over. Assuming it seems okay before I leave for work, I'll make sure it's the first bottle he gets at daycare.
@avivoca: Yes! If it was warmed at all, I would use it immediately, but it was refrigerated all day, so hopefully it'll be okay for the morning! Thanks!

I've used it the next morning before...I just did a sniff test. Smelled fine and he drank it no problem.

@kiddosc: I did the sniff test (and even tasted it) and it seemed fine, so I sent it to daycare for his first bottle! Hope it goes over smoothly, haha.
@cmomma17: Weaning is going well! This week I'm only producing 12 oz (down from 18) which is both good and sad, haha. I'll be glad to be done pumping!

I now try to keep it to 24 hours, but as long as it's under 48, I don't freak out about it. I would probably be stricter for a newborn, or if my kid had health issues, but we've definitely gone into the 36 hour range with no problems before.

I would defrost under running cold water and use it right away. No waste and no forgotten defrosted milk in the fridge.

I didn't fully read the rules for using milk when I had my first baby, and I had thawed milk in the fridge for 5-7 days

@Lozza: OMG, thank you so much for posting that! I really should've checked kellymom since that's been my go-to for all things breastfeeding, haha. I feel soooooo much better with seeing that guideline of 24-48 hours! YAY!

like @Purpledaisy:, a few times i used it in the 24-48 hour timeframe instead of the 24 hour timeframe. didn't seem to be a problem. i would thaw the milk in the refrigerator as opposed to putting it in hot water--don't know if that makes a difference (as in, it didn't really get to room temp until i actually gave it to him).

@edelweiss: That's what we did! I thawed it in the fridge and it stayed refrigerated all day, so never got to room temp.
Maybe I'll save it in the fridge for now and if it seems still good in the morning, I'll still use it.
