LO has thrush, being a 1st time mom, I didn't catch it until she was about 2.5 months old. She was never fussy during feedings and I never had any pain, so I just thought her tounge was white from BF. Dr. gave us antibiotics, but after using them for a week it actually looked like it was getting worse (spread from tounge to back of her gums). I stopped using meds a few days ago and her tounge is looking better.
So...I'm debating-should I hold off on the meds and see if it clears up on its own, or should I use the meds no matter what? LO still isn't fussy during bottles or BF, so it doesn't seem to bother her at all. Any other mommas ever deal with thrush and how long did it it take using the meds for it to clear up in LO?

I haven't personally dealt with thrush so I don't recall what the general treatments are but do know it can be quite difficult to get rid of for good AND that antibiotics often cause/make thrush worse b/c they kill the good flora in the gut that keeps yeast in check... something little babes are already lacking.
Definitely start probiotics b/c they'll help build/strengthen that good gut flora.
I'm sure some of the other bees have more details on treatments. =)

I'm not sure I can say if you should stop with the meds or not, however LO always spit them out so I stopped and hers cleared up on it's own in about a month.

@bao: my LO also either spit it out or swallowed it right away
@runsyellowlites: I had read something about the meds possibly making it worse...I think I'll hold off on any more meds unless it looks like it's getting significantly worse in LO's mouth. Looks like I'll be stopping at the store for some probiotic yogurt on my way home!

We had thrush (well, I did - never spotted it in LO's mouth) and I was on diflucan and they gave me nystatin for her. She took the meds, though, and never showed signs so it worked for us. I'm not really sure what to do in your situation, but go with your instincts and see what happens!

I would 100% finish te meds. I feel like what happens when you don't is that the yeast doesn't get fully killed and then comes back even stronger, and is sometimes more resistant to the antibiotics. So definitely finish it.

If you truly believe it is thrush, you should finish the medication.
I will mention that my son has always had a white tongue while breastfeeding. I worried it was thrush but the doctor told me some babies just have white tongues. So, we stopped the medication early because he didn't actually have thrush.

Do you know what the meds are called? If it's a yellow liquid it's probably Nystatin which is an anti-fungal that doesn't have a very high success rate.
My LO is twelve weeks old and we've been battling thrush for two months now and it sux! You definitely want to get rid of it from baby because you don't want it in your nipples. You also don't want to be passing it back and forth between you both.
I'm now using Daktarin gel for LO which seems to be much more effective and I'm also continuing to treat my nipples so I think we're getting on top of it. I'm also washing all our laundry in hot water and line drying it in the sun. I've also been told to sterilise any dummies, toys, bottles etc that baby uses so that we're not continually re-introducing the thrush back.

Yes- the dr. gave us Nystatin for her mouth and to apply a little to my nipples. I don't have thrush on my nipples, but dr. said it will help to prevent me from getting it.
I also sterilise all of the bottle nipples and pump parts every night to help. Her mouth seems to be getting better without the Nystatin, so I think I'm going to give it a few more days before either starting back up the Nystatin or calling the Dr. for another medication option.

@KEMMA: Depending on how old your kid is, Daktarin the oral gel form of micronazole (commonly found in topical vaginal yeast creams), generally should not be given infants under four months of age, or those whose swallowing reflex is not yet fully developed.

@fatkid: yep, it's not generally prescribed in New Zealand as the primary treatment for infant thrush but my GP was happy to write me a script as I had discussed its use with both my Lactation Consultant and my Well Child Nurse so I was we'll informed on the potential risks. LO had also failed to respond to three scripts for Nystatin.
My LO is almost three months and I measure out a pea sized blob and use a baby spoon to put tiny amounts on her tongue to ensure she's not going to choke on it.

Maybe your baby doesn't really have thrush? I am pretty sure my babe was misdiagnosed a month or so ago, but we did a course of nystatin just in case. I really doubt that would make things worse, unless you're double dipping. I screwed up at first and had to start again with a new bottle once I figured out I was contaminating it. Also, the important thing is for the medicine to be in the mouth - it's ok if the baby spits it out after few seconds!

@sloaneandpuffy: my LO was such a ninja when it came to spitting out Nystatin, I swear I had yellow spots over just about everything the Baby came in contact with!

happy to report thrush is almost all gone after sticking with the meds (nystatin) for about a week and a half. I'll continue to give LO meds until it looks like it's fully gone-thanks for everyone's input!
