I've tried with my almost-6 year old, and she still can't do it. I mean, by "tried", I sat down once or twice and tried to show her.

My issue is, she's a lefty and I am a righty, so when I show her, I show her how I do it, and then she struggles. But when I try to reverse it, like use my left hand, then I struggle. I've seen some hacks that work with sneakers, but we also have some mary Jane type shoes that have a strap with a tie (for the cute bow effect) and we tried the hack on those, and it doesn't work.

One thing that can help is using two different colored laces and lighter colored laces to help see what's happening with the loops more clearly.
Does anyone have a feeling about whether the two bunny ears or one bunny ear is better for beginning learners? I've tried a little with my almost 6 year old, but I'm really going to try to work on it this summer.

@Becky: Great idea to start with one or two steps at a time. We have been doing that with our son, too. It helps the kids feel successful and prevents too much frustration. So he knows how to do the first couple steps, he attempts the next step, and then we do the end.

We got DD1 this book for Christmas, she was wanting to learn how to tie shoes. It’s been great, she practices with it and can tie the laces in the book and can allllllllllmost get her shoes tied by herself- if her shoe laces were a little longer, she could do it on her own.

@PinkElephant: My biggest tip is to find a shoe tying class in your area and have someone else teach LOs to tie their shoes. Our Nordstrom’s and local children’s shoe store both have shoe tying classes and my kids learned to tie their shoes in an hour (after multiple unsuccessful attempts at learning from DH and me).

DD is 5.5 and doesn't know. And embarrassingly, I struggled SO hard with just one bunny ear and cannot do it that way to this day.

@Mrs. Sunshine: I think I learned how to tie my shoes at school around 6. I remember a day where they were teaching us. I have never been able to do the one bunny ear way. I have done 2 bunny ears my whole life. I used to get embarrassed if I thought someone was watching me do it because I was the only person doing it that way.

@poppygirl15: this is cool, but they wouldn’t be able to untie them themselves after which would be frustrating. I’m already concerned about teaching my kid to tie her shoes now! Laces are the worst.
