Do you feel that it matters if a daycare worker looking after your child can't speak English fluently? Do you think it's fine up until your LO is a certain age? What age would that be?

I would care from newborn until the end! Not so much for babies sake, but I can't understand accents worth a crap. So if I couldn't communicate with my caregiver, I wouldn't feel comfortable.

My LO's favorite daycare worker doesn't speak a lot English. My LO's picking up a lot of Spanish from being there. He's still pretty young, but we were assured that he'll learn Spanish and English letters and numbers while there. I'm not concerned at all especially since childcare workers in our area tend to be Hispanic.

@MrsTiz: I agree fluency is important so I can communicate with the caregiver.
A bilingual caregiver willing to teach my future LO another language is a plus. I am used to accents.

It would depend on if there were English speakers there also, and how long LO was there. I like the idea of LO picking up on other languages from a very young age, like @cascademom: mentions. But I'd also want them to be hearing English a lot and to be able to communicate well with the people who are with LO all day. Then again, I hear the best way for them to learn another language is total immersion, but then I don't know how you would communicate with the caregiver.

I would never ever hire someone that wasn't fluent in English. I think it's super important to be able to communicate everything to the caregiver and have them feel comfortable communicating everything to me. In a previous job, I saw many caregivers who barely spoke any English working for families who did not speak a second language. I never understood it.
