It never occurred to me about babies and when they start drinking water until the post @AutumnLove: posted. If our parents generation gave us water to keep us full but that's not correct, when DO you give water? No water when you are BFing? IDK - probably a totally stupid question I should just Google. I just never even thought about it before!

My drs office says water in a sippy cup is fine around six months.

I started at 6 months. I offered it in a sippy cup because I wanted her to learn how to use a straw.

I don't know, but my FIL has already told me several times that we will have to her LO water during the summer to keep her from getting dehydrated. I don't know about that, but we'll see.

Around six months.... during the summer he was 4-6 months though so sometimes if we were outside I would let him have some sips. He was/is breastfed
At a year old he now drinks A TON of water, he loves it!

I think it's just a good developmental window. They can start holding their own bottle/cup.

@Grace: Yeah - that is what I am wondering too? Is it maybe just tap water might not be good for a LOs sensitive tummy? I have no idea!
* Then again, my mom is the one who gave us apple juice and soda even in bottles!

From what I've read the only issue with giving too much water too early is that it can reduce the number of calories baby consumes which can cause feeding issues.
My Well Child Nurse advised that it was ok to give small amounts of water from about three months onwards on particularly warm days.

My ped said we could start offering it at 4 months. We didn't offer it regularly until she was eating solids well at 6.5-7 months.

I started at 5.5 months when I started feeing Sienna solids. Mavrick it was 4 months. He was an early eater

My pediatrician said we could start offering it in a sippy cup at 6 months. He wanted us to offer it in a sippy cup so she'd learn how to use one so the transition from bottles wouldn't be so bad.

Our Midwife said to start water when we start solids, so that was 5.5 months for us, and she only ever drinks a few mls per day. We were also told that before 6 months, it needs to be boiled water, after six months, straight up tap water is fine. LO drinks maybe 20 mls of water per day from a toddler sippy cup (not the spill proof cups) and seems fine with that.

You should wait until 4-6 months and then only sips...they can get water intoxication:
