DS has never been a bowl or plate thrower thankfully. We started giving him utensils when he started getting independent and not wanting us to feed him so about 11 to 12 months I think. We did that and a lot of finger foods. At daycare by the time he reached the toddler room (13-14 months) they encourage utensils as often as the child is willing so he's got pretty good by 16 months or so. We found he was more willing to try new things if he could use a fork.

We give her mostly finger foods, but at this point we can 'load up' her spoon and set it on her tray and she will feed herself. I will let her play with a spoon and yogurt or whatever just to let her get used to it. It's a mess though. She is almost 11 months
