DS is almost 10 months and can sit up, but can't use restaurant high chairs because he always slides forward in them!

About 5 months. Charlie could sit in a high chair well then. Olive was much much older.

When she could sit well unassisted (about the same time she could sit in a grocery cart). I would pad the extra space in the chair with the grocery cart cover so she wouldn't fall forwards like @Katrocap: mentioned.

I think it was around 6.5 months...when he'd been sitting up straight and unassisted.

We first tried around 7.5 months, and it worked well. Before then (and we still use this now, when no high chairs are available), we used the Totseat - it's seriously amazing! Turns any chair into something a baby can sit in. We started using that at 5 months, just before LO was sitting unassisted. http://www.amazon.com/Trendykid-TS005-TrendyKid-Totseat-Chocolate/dp/B001QC77W0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1382318637&sr=8-1&keywords=totseat

I tried at 5 months and she was still wobbly but we tried again 2 weeks later and she had so much more control in posture and hand coordination. It's amazing how fast they change and learn!

Not until about 8 months, we just used the infant bucket seat before that. Around 8 months he could sit comfortably for longer periods of time.
