Do you wait until starting solids to introduce water? When you do, when do you give LO the water? Will the solid meal?

We did with solids. He still sort of plays with it at 8 months; we offer but don't push it.

We started offering it at 6 months in a zoli cup. I would give it to her with meals but also just sometimes while she was playing. It took her a long time to figure it out and she didn't take very much for a month or so. I sometimes feel like she still doesn't take much at 10 months!
ETA: agree with PP about not pushing it! I offered it as more of a toy in the beginning. She definitely drinks more if I'm drinking water from my straw cup too

Also starting offering at 6 months and she wasn't really drinking that much until 8-9 months.

Our Ped said with solids. I forget a lot, though, and just started getting better at it recently (8 mo).

We started when we started solids, in a straw cup. We offered with meals at first, and then started offering throughout the day, especially when it's really hot.

6 months, offering with meals. The pedi suggested trying to get 1 oz in with each meal to prevent constipation but we've never had any constipation issues anyway.

We started in a Zoli cup when we introduced solids. I put it on his tray and let him play with it. He figured it out right away. He loves it...he probably gets more water than he's supposed to!

We started with solids after her meal. She just chews on the straw and water dribbles out of her mouth. Don't think she's actually drinking much.

our Ped said 4 months but we started to give her water at 6 months. we also used the playtex little grippers straw cup

We started around 7ish months or so (I didn't start solids until about 6.5 months)? Probably around the time we offered puffs for the first time. It took LO a bit to catch on and like it. She's still not a big water drinker, but she will drink some. And spits out the rest-lol!

We started water when we started solids. We put the water in a straw cup.

When you all started offering water, would you just put the cup near them? Or would you actually bring it to their lips to see if they would drink it? I'm not sure Xander would have a clue what to do if I put a sippy cup (or something) near him!

We started around 7 months just to see if she could use the cup/straw.
@Adira: I tried with a cup first on her highchair and she banged it and splashed water in her face. She was not amused! I'm terrible at doing real meals but when we are out and about I usually have a straw cup for her to play with/drink from.

6 months when we started solids.
@Adira: I put it to her mouth. At 10 months she still likes to bang it around and throw it, which is NOT okay with that $12 Zoli cup. If I bring it to her mouth and she grabs it and starts sucking then she's thirsty.. If not, I take it back.

We started at 6 months with the nuby straw cup (LO didnt like the playtex one)
@8months hes finally drinking regularly.
I don't give with meals, just when we're out and about.
@Adira: It took us a week or two of putting the straw in his mouth before he "got it"

@katsupgirl: @LaineysMom: @wheres_c: Thanks ladies!!! I'm scared of all the changes that are coming up! BFing and giving a bottle are just so simple right now!

we waited 'til we started solids at 5.5 months. started with a sippy but ds didnt really take to it, and didn't really like water either!
at six months we tried a playtex lil gripper straw cup and he took to it like a champ. he eats 3 meals, snacks at least 2x a day and drinks water throughout with those feeds. (he's almost 8.5 months)

We started at solids and with meals, she's just now at 10 months drinking it.

@bunnylove08: We have the playtex straw cup too but LO still doesnt seem to know how to use it. She just chews and chews. I squeeze the sides but then the water just dribbles out of her mouth. How long did it take your LO to figure it out?

@dolphin: maybe about a week. We also started to give her food pouches and she learned to suck up the food that way and I think it helped with the straw cup. She still has a little trouble with the cup. After she got the hang up sucking we switched to the munchkin straw cup so it takes a little more effort to drink and she doesn't suck up the water so fast

@Adira: I bought it to her. She didn't learn to take the cup herself until maybe 7 months. She would hold the cup but wouldn't put it to her lips

at 7 months, as we started solids. we give it to him in a bottle that's kinda like a camel back, in that it's got the straw and he has to kinda bite on it for it to work. he didn't really drink much of it til around 9 or 10 months.

How do you know if LO is thirsty for water or breastmilk?
