My son goes to preschool at Emilio Reggio inspired school and LOVES it. He goes everyday, hours are 6:30 - 6:30. My husband drops him off on his way to work and I pick him up after DD last nap. I am a WAHM but DD stays with me. I've been picking him up around 4:30 p.m. because that is when DD has finished her nap. However, he is having SO much fun he never wants to leave. Should I push back his pick up time to 5:30? After I pick him up, we go to the gym for an hour. I feel like a bad mom leaving him there when in theory I can pick him up. What would you do?

@BandDmommy: is he in the day care at the gym? If so, I would just leave him at school while you go to the gym. Seems silly to pick him up from school he loved just to put him in another day care situation. If it's play gym for him then I would keep picking him up and taking him. I pick my LO up around 4:30 every day and it already feels like I have so little time with her, I wouldn't want to push it back to 5:30 even though some days she definitely wants to stay at school and play with her friends!

Why don't you just pick him up after the gym? I bet the gym daycare is less nice and fun than his preschool

I had my son picked up, I feel you on the guilt.
It sounds like a good environment though, so maybe you can stagger, and pick him up some days early and others later?

@looch: That's what I was thinking about doing, picking him up early Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and later on Tuesday and Wednesday.

@BandDmommy: I forgot how old your oldest is but have you thought about asking him what he prefers? My 28m old often surprises me by definitely having an opinion on easily comprehended situations.

@Pumuckl: He's 3. If I asked him, he would say "I don't want to go home." Like EVER. He hates going home, if he could play until he passed out he would.

@BandDmommy: My kids are this way too - our DCP closes at 6pm and my DS asks me to pick him up at 5:59pm - as a compromise I work out 2 days a week after work at 4:15- 5:15 (instead of the evening) and then pick them up at 5:40ish.

haha, I send my kids to daycare on my day off!
I would definitely pick up your son sometime AFTER you go to the gym. Whether right after or even later is up to you. My kid doesn't like getting picked up before 5:00 from daycare, so that's when I aim to pick him up, even on my days off.

If he loves it, let him stay, more time for you! I haven't gone through this, but the mommy guilt shouldn't be as bad since he wants to stay anyway?

@BandDmommy: haha, yeah, mine used to have a tantrum if I showed up at 4:30, so now I make sure to show up right around 5:00 and then he's cool to leave. If all his friends are still there, he doesn't want to go!

I have guilt about how long LO is in care, but there's no ability to ever pick her up early, so it just is what it is. She's there from 7-6 and then sometimes we go to the gym after that! So, your kid is still in care less time than mine

If he loves it, let him stay! I would definitely wait and pick him up after you go to the gym.
