The re-emergence of the Link Roundup has gotten me fired up again about our education system. I am more and more a supporter of homeschooling and other learning programs/paths that allow for more individualization, but it's just not possible for our family as my husband and I have to work full-time. We have an excellent Waldorf-based school in our town, but the cost is prohibitive. Our oldest just started Kindergarten at almost 5 years old, and a big part of not holding her back was because we couldn't afford to send her to a great pre-school program (she would have had to repeat her less than stellar 4 year old program). While our public school district is very good, it's still a public school district. I'm panicky thinking about the next dozen years of structured education my girls will receive, especially after experiencing a Kindergarten lunch yesterday.
So, what do you do when public school is your only option, even when you don't feel like it's an ideal option?
PS: This is not to knock teachers of any sort. Every teacher I know personally wishes they could do things differently, especially for younger children. It's frustration with the actual system.
My kids would not be happy in a homeschool setting because they are very social.
I don't think my classroom resembles that at *all*, nor does any classroom I know....and I work at a low-income, challenged school. I know you're trying to go for a metaphor but I find it way too extreme.
