I was searching the board and looks like a lot of people recommended the Yumbox for kids starting Kindergarten. I think I will get one too! Which one did you get?

@dolphin: We have the panino. I like the large compartment. If I'm not packing a sandwich I can still use the silicone cupcake liners to separate food if I need to.
Also, follow the 100 days of real food blog, she has coupon codes for yumbox a few times a year! I think the current one is TRY20.

We have the original for both kids! I like packing them little random leftovers.

We have 2 of the original versions, mainly because our kids don't really like sandwiches. We used both during kindergarten and they continue to hold up great.

@KT326: @psw27: @NorthStar: Thank you!!! What kind of lunch bag do you use for the Yumbox?

@dolphin: We had one from Lands End, but I'm going to get a PackIt Freezable lunchbag or box for this upcoming school year. DD thought that her yogurt or string cheese wasn't cold enough at lunch time, so I want to try one of those vs. a small ice pack.

@dolphin: We just use these cheapy ones from Amazon:
They hold the yumbox plus a thin ice pack perfectly.

This is probably a dumb question but for those of you that have them - do you have one box and multiple trays? Or do you have multiple full sets? Right now we use Easy Lunchboxes which are just a tupperware thing, and we have a ton of them because they are not very expensive. I'd like to switch to YumBoxes because we have tons of leaks, but not sure if I need to get multiple full sets per kid or not! (We ideally pack 2 days worth of lunches at a time)

@HappyBaker: We have 2 full sets and honestly, I'm not even sure if you can buy the case separate from the tray. I don't have any leak issues with what we have. We only had 1 set for awhile, but wanted to be able to pack the next day's lunch before doing dishes that night, so we needed a minimum of 2. As our 2nd kid gets older, I could see us buying one or two more.

We have the original and love it. I don't have to worry about my daughter not liking what I pack because I pack such a variety she's guaranteed to like some of it. I don't even put it in a lunch bag, but it goes in a fridge so we don't need an ice pack.
@HappyBaker: We only have one tray but I could see the benefit of having a second. We hand wash it right after school and then pack it again the same night. No need to get multiple outer containers. I think you could just slip the packed tray into a sealed gallon ziploc until the day you're ready to use it.

@HappyBaker: I love/hate easy lunch boxes. The leaks are driving me nuts though so I just took the plunge on yumbox. I got 3 extra trays + 2 yumboxes for the same it would have cost for 2 yumboxes and 2 extra trays because it let me hit free shipping. Amazon is definitely not cheaper than the website in this case.
I ordered the original after A LOT of obsessing. Neither kid eats sandwiches, though, so that played into it.

@LBee: So, i didn't realize you could buy separate trays. That definitely comes in handy!

I got the panino because it was all the store had, but I anticipate a lot of sandwiches so I’m sure it will be fine, and I bought silicone cupcake liners so I can make smaller compartments if I need to.
For those who have a packit lunch bag, do you find it heavy? I was looking at buying one but I read some reviews that said it was pretty heavy for kids. I was also trying to find more trays but couldn’t find them individually - I was sure I checked the website but maybe not?

Original and I hate it. It's fine for use if you want to make lunches in the morning. But if I put it in the fridge overnight, the bottom piece sticks to the top and she can't get it open. It's a mess and the company can't figure out why it happens.

@NorthStar: @SteelerGirl: Thanks!
@LBee: Awesome that sounds like a good plan for extra trays / cases! And yes I've used Easy Lunchboxes for years and am finally ready to throw in the towel - we left DD's lunch in the car overnight by accident and because it leaked everywhere and all over her backback and my car seat the smell was barf-inducing.

We have 2 original boxes (2 kids) and like 6 trays (so 4 extra ... think I got at least one free). I have very occasionally had them all in the dishwasher but that’s probably just me! I should say I just wipe out the outer shell some days and hand clean it others, trays in dishwasher.
Neither of mine take sandwiches to school much but I use amazon Tupperware in that case. I do think eventually the original won’t be enough food.
I use a packit just for the older one who complains about warm cheese!

@mediagirl: that’s odd! I had an issue with the latch on one and they ended up replacing the whole thing for free, maybe push for that?

@erinbaderin: i do think it’s a little heavy but for a kindergartner I think it’s fine. Not sure what age you are looking at.
We bought our trays on the yumbox website but I think they sometimes sell out or don’t have them for a while.

We have two yumbox paninos and I just ordered two yumbox minis for after school snacks.
I really need to look into extra trays

We have four yumbox originals (two for each kid) because I usually make their lunches while I’m making dinner and the boxes from today haven’t been washed yet. Best investment ever!!! It makes packing lunches so easy and the kids love them.

@erinbaderin: I used a pack it for DDs lunch today and weighed it - it was 2lbs 10oz
Had :
small Lunchable
small bottle water
fruit in tupperware
yogurt
goldfish

@QBbride: That's what we do too! It definitely makes it easier to prep while making dinner since you have food out already

We have and LOVE the Panino. DS started using it at 3.5
Fortunately, he doesn't mind if different types of food touch, so I like the option of the bigger compartment for sandwiches or multiple small things -- and I don't feel like I need to fill up 7 small containers each with different foods. (ironically, I usually end up sending about 6-7 different things, but I don't feel like I HAVE to...)
We put that and a flat ice pack inside an LL Bean insulated lunch box, and love it https://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/70705?page=lunch-box
I also have this wildkin insulated lunchbox as a backup, in case the LLBean one got really dirty and I need to wash it one night... but it is bigger so I don't love it as much as the LL Bean one. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HZFCBUA/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
ETA: I have 1 panino outer case, and 2 inner trays. It works great for us.
