Can I ask something perhaps dumb?
Why is it ok to breastfeed as long as you want - even on demand....but you're supposed to ditch the bottle at age 1?
My son has been exclusively bottle fed since 6 weeks and I know I need to wean him soon, but I don't really know why.

I *think* it's because sucking on a bottle can mess up their teeth but nursing doesn't.

Maybe because of teeth coming in? Maybe long term bottle usage can affect the shape or cause decay (if baby goes to sleep with a bottle)? no idea though, really...

Yeah it's kind of weird when you think about it. Is a sippy cup that much better than a bottle? Our sippy cups have spouts that are shaped rather similarly to a bottle...

I think that it has to do w/ cavities and teeth formation, but @skibobrown: YES, why are so many sippy cups shaped like bottles!?

It also has to go with the way milk comes out.
With breastfeeding the child really has to suck the milk out and it doesn't pool in their mouth and sit on their teeth.
Bottles are a bit better but still leak into the mouth and pool the milk on their teeth.

@skibobrown: I think that is why more people are encouraging straw cups as opposed to traditional sippies.
