Yea, I don't think I could ever do that! I am a worrier too... what if something would happen!?! I have heard of one other person doing that though and I was very surprised!

There was a dad that was arrested because he did this. His wife called him and realized that he was at a club and called her parents to go check on the baby. The baby was crying and awake. Apparently he had been doing this for a while. The wife worked nights and he had the kids. He would put them to bed and then go to the club while the kids were asleep. The baby was 7 months old.

I totally do not agree with this at all!

I would be terrified as 2 year old to wake up, look for my parents, and find that I was home all alone.

NEVER EVER!!! What if there's a fire? Carbon monoxide? The power goes out and the other neighbor doesn't know? Neighbor falls asleep? House is burglarized? So many things could happen. No way would I ever ever think about doing this. Crazy.

A friend of a friend does this and I think it's a terrible idea.

No, I might go outside to grab the mail or take the dog out for a pee break but that is it!

What good is the monitor when you are out to dinner? It would take ages to get back and do anything. I think that's completely negligent.

I agree with PP. It's one thing to go next door for 5 minutes or a very short dog walk type scenario but no, I'd never go to dinner and leave the monitor with my neighbor.

@adnama: I might be the odd one out but here is my situation:

We live in an apartment that is literally one mile from DH's work. Before we had Cobi I would drop him off and pick him up from work so I could have the car for the day, but since he often works til 10:30 this was no longer an option with a baby who goes to bed between 7-8pm.

There have been soooo many times I wish I could ask the neighbors in our apartment to listen on the monitor while I drive a mile to pick up DH, which would allow me to have the car for the day. As it is I'm home alone 24/5 in the winter because we have to share a car, in the summer he bikes/walks to work.

Anyway, we don't know our neighbors so we don't do this. I'd have to be REALLY good friends with them.

I wouldn't do this to go out to dinner unless we specifically asked the neighbors to babysit our child.

Do they live a house or an apartment? I would leave a video monitor with someone in my building (6 units, 3 floors) while I did something. Doesn't seem different than being in a big house and in a different area than baby. I also would be fine going next door (provided it was super close) or out in the yard with older kids while baby slept with a video monitor. If the power went out would know because the video monitor would cut out, if an alarm went off you'd hear it, if you have a dog you'll know if anyone tries to enter the house- plus you can see the house. I've gone to parties in buildings where people have brought their baby monitor with them because they didn't see a point in hiring a sitter to sit directly above them while the baby slept when all they had to do was walk upstairs to the baby if it woke. I wouldn't go down the street, but next door I would. I can see how some people wouldn't be comfortable leaving the monitor with someone though.

that doesn't sound like a good idea to me. i wouldn't do it.

at 21 months old, the baby can walk. she could walk right out of house without ever crying and the neighbors could totally miss it on the monitor.

Nope. What if the monitor failed? I'd much rather pay the neighbor to come over to my house. I have no problem whatsoever going outside and doing yard work or something like that while she's napping. We don't have a monitor so I just crack her window and listen.
I have left my 11 year old son with her while she's napping, I've only gone a few blocks to the post office, 5 minutes at the most. He had a way to get ahold of me.

Absolutely not. I am horrified at the thought! Same building, with really super close next door neighbors who happily watch the monitor while I'm only gone for 1 min to get the mail, maaaaaybe, but otherwise definitely not.

Never. I actually missed book club at our neighbors last night because DH was at work till 10 pm and someone needed to be home with LO even though he was asleep and we do have a monitor.
