I've had a request to share some of my milk with a local mom in need. I figure that since I recently lost my big freezer stash due to power outage, and bc I SAH I don't really *need* extra milk, I should donate the few bags that I have frozen. Better than them jut sitting there, or worse, going to waste!
What would you do?

If I had a lot of extra milk & a good nursing relationship, I would donate. Especially since sometimes I look at my freezer stuff and think "when am I ever going to use you?" I wouldn't want it to go to waste either!

I have a very small stash (18oz) that I had pumped for our vacation that wasn't used, I'm donating it to a local mom before it exceeds the 3 month regular freezer deadline!

@runsyellowlites: I have 500 oz in my freezer. I'm NEVER going to go through it all and a lot of it is before I eliminated for MSPI ! Don't want it to waste !!! (Needless to say I have a major oversupply ! )

Yep. I pumped about 150oz to send to a milk bank. I had oversupply and felt bad for all the wasted leaking milk. Now hopefully some preemies get to drink it

I've thought about it a lot. If I had plenty in my stash coming up close to expiring, then I would definitely like to donate it.

Wow! I'm amazed by the freezer stashes you ladies have!
Right now, it's a struggle to get LO all the BM he needs, so I can't really imagine ever being able to donate. If I had oversupply, I definitely would.
My LO was a late pre-term baby and I saw how he struggled with formula before my milk came in. I'd love to be able to help other preemies but I don't know if I'll ever have a good enough supply for that.

@mewtill: I've gotten conflicting information so I'm going with the 3 month.. also we open & close our freezer alot so I thought it better safe than sorry!

I've given some to a friend in need but I HATE pumping so I don't get enough to set up a system with either a bank or a Mama in need

I did! I donated over 1,100 oz to a mama adopting. We couldn't use the milk because of DS's allergies so I felt it should go to a good home

I might donate a little but I'm hoarding the rest in a deep freezer.
I wanted to donate about 2000 ounces last summer but it was rejected because I took herbal supplements and anti inflammatory meds for carpal. I ended up getting pregnant shortly after and I used every ounce up from the time I weaned LO at 9 months up to 14 months.

LO isn't here yet so obviously I have no idea what my supply and pumping situation will be but if I had plenty of extra and no issue rebuilding a stash, I would. My friend donated to a milk bank and I was so impressed-- both that she was able to build up such a great stash, and that she was willing to donate it. I feel like I would have been more selfish and hoarded it.

Yes. I donated about 500-600 oz to two moms about a month ago. I threw away about 200 oz before I knew about it and was running out of room in my freezer. That was painful!

I really want to! Since I work from home for the most part, my freezer stash isn't used that often, so I have definitely thought about it. I am currently saving up for a week long trip away from LO this summer, but after that I plan to donate at least some.

I would! I was planning on donating some but totally slacked and now half of the milk left in my fridge is expired. Boo!
But I did donate my milk to a breast cancer study! I felt really good about that.
