My 3 year old will be having lunch at school this year. Thinking about getting her a Yumbox. Should I get the 6-compartment or the 4-compartment box?

I use the 6 compartment one for both my 2 and 3 yr old. I like it because I can put more variety and because they're not into things like sandwiches. There are times when I have to squish things to make them fit. But for the most part it works well for us.

I wouldn't say it's a better idea because I've never used a Yumbox, but I have a cheaper idea I got LO the 2-pack of Bentgo boxes from Groupon and I love them. They look similar to Yumboxes. They have 5 compartments

We have the 4 compartment one. I use the silicone muffin cups in the large compartment when I need them. It works out great. I feel like it gives me more options, I can put a whole sliced apple in the large part with some bell peppers or use the muffin cups for smaller items. The dipping part is also bigger in the 4 compartment, I usually put hummus in it.

@lawbee11: are those easy to hand wash? I love the Yumbox but we don't have a dishwasher so the insert can sometimes be a pain to wash.

@KT326: I've only washed them in the dishwasher so I'm not sure. Doesn't seem like it would be too bad, though.

@lawbee11: I saw that! Ah decisions decisions....
Is it crazy that I'm hesitating from Bentgo kids because they don't have a pink option? And DD LOVES pink...

@KT326: thanks for chiming in! I do feel like the 4-compartment may grow with her better....

I had the same dilemma and everyone told me to do the 4 compartment bc like @KT326 said you can always divide the big compartment with those silicone muffin cups but you can't make the 6 compartment one bigger so you end up squishing stuff.
I do a sandwich cut into quarters and stack two on top of two in half of the big compartment and then I can fit something in the other half - like crackers, cheese sticks or cut up meat. Then fruit and veggies and go in the two smaller compartments on the other side and for the round thing I can put raisins or nuts or a little treat like a few fruit snacks. I really love the Yumbox and so does LO. I thought I'd be just meh about it but I really love it. So much better than using several small separate Tupperware like I was doing before. It's great for road trips too!

We have a 6 compartment yum box and I think a 4 might be better down the road. It depends what she usually eats but the 6 one isn't great for sandwiches.

I have the 6 compartment and it's fine so far...not really helpful since it seems like the opinions are split, LOL

I love LOVE our 6 compartment yumboxes. So much so we have four it depends if your DD eats sandwiches or more snacky style lunches. I don't send sandwiches to daycare, my kids usually eat cut up leftover meat, yoghurt/cottage cheese/cheese, fruit, veggies so the 6 works well for us.
Having said that you could always get the 4 compartment and use silicone liners to divide the compartments (though obviously they wouldn't be leak proof, which I think is the big plus with yumboxes!)

We have the 4 compartment Yumbox, and it's perfect for us. I also use silicone cups to add more variety. I find that there can be big/odd sized foods that fit perfectly in the big compartment. Sandwiches, dumplings, and mini burritos fit nicely, but it would be difficult in the 6 compartment Yumbox.

Thanks for your input everyone! I think I'm leaning towards the 4-compartment because I think it will grow with her better....too bad those yumboxes aren't cheaper, I would just buy one of each!

Does anyone use a yumbox with a pbk lunch box? Specifically the square style like the one in the link below?

@tinyperson: yes- and it fits but not really any room for anything else.

@tinyperson: yup, just tried it...definitely fits but it's tight!

@ohapostrophe: @Ginabean3: thanks!! We just bought Rubbermaid lunchblox containers and am totally rethinking them. One container for her to open by herself vs several....

@tinyperson: Yah, I feel like my DD would lose the lids if they were separate from the main container!

@Ginabean3: we have this one and love it. My kids aren't sandwich eaters and like variety so this has been perfect!

Random question but does anybody have the Aztec Red Yumbox? I was thinking about ordering a red one for my son (his favorite color) but the only Amazon review says that it is actually pink..
