My 4 month old started Zantac a few days ago to see if her fussiness during feedings improve. The thing tastes so horrible and she screams every time I give it to her. How do you give it to your LO? Is there a way to make it less traumatic?

we had better luck giving her a little at a time. I think her dose was 1 ml twice per day and each dose would be like 4 tiny squirts with the syringe. I wonder if she reaaaaaally won't take it though if they could switch you to prevacid? That isn't minty and they can flavor it so our LO took it easier. Also, our baby became obsessed with taking sips of water out of my glass. So I started giving her sips of water out of a shot glass (she dribbles less bc it is smaller). So then my DH tried giving her the medicine out of the shot glass and she loves it. Gulps it down every morning lol. Prob not widespread advice but... whatever works man.

We're on day 5 of stating Zantac ourselves! The first few days were brutal but I think we're getting into a rhthym. I lean her back on my lap and squirt a tiny bit as far back as I can in her check. I then pucker her lips a bit so she can't spit it out and wait to hear her swallow. I usually do that about 6 times (she gets madder with each squirt). I find if I do too much she's more likely to spit it out or gag on it. Some people are able to use medicine dispensing pacifiers and bottles but that didn't work for us. You could also try putting it in the refrigerator (notice the cold more than the taste) or asking your pharmacist to flavor it. Giving meds to babies though totally sucks in general but hopefully after a few more days you'll find something that works!

I don't think they can flavor it. I try to give it to her a little at a time, but I feel like that just prolongs the misery. She screams and cries and is so mad every time.
@Mrs. Deer: has it been working for you so far? We are on day 3, and will give it a week. If things don't improve by a week, I don't think it's working.

@Pumpkin Pie: maybe a little? It's hard to tell because her only issue is refusal to nurse and sometimes she'll have a couple of good days... I'm giving it like a week and a half before I ask for Prevacid (which you can just put the tablet in their cheek - so much easier!).

@Pumpkin Pie: I asked CVS to flavor it and they made it grape. But Im sure it still tastes horrible as he still hates it. I called CVS and they said I could bring back the bottle and pay $3 to add the flavor. We squirt the entire 7 ml into the back of his cheek, and hold his jaw closed until it looks like he's swallowed, and then give him his paci. It's easier if both my husband and I do it together.

I think with the Zantac I had a routine of doing small squirts from the syringe into the side of his cheek while pressing/rubbing repeatedly under his chin. It was a trick our ped showed me to prevent him from spitting out the meds. Then I'd pop a pacifier into his mouth right away to encourage him to suck.
The Zantac didn't work, though, and we ended up having to use a flavored Prilosec syrup that he really hated...which we just dilute with water and offer in a bottle. So that's another option!

Our LO has been on Zantac for 3 months now, started at 4 months. From the beginning we made it a really happy thing.. lots of smiles and clapping from mom and dad, snuggles and kisses when he finished it etc. He cringes every time so I know he hates the taste but he sees how happy we are and smiles back. I know it wouldn't work for everyone but our LO seems really in tune to our emotions/stress/behavior so he picks up on it.
@Meridian: 7mL? Holy crap. They should find a way make a stronger dose! We only have to do 1mL twice daily.

@thismustbetheplace: Oops, just kidding, it's 0.7 ML, hahaha! I swear, we're not drugging our kid!!

@Mrs. Deer: has your ped diagnosed as reflux? Our doc said if Zantac doesn't work then she wouldn't prescribe another med since my LO is gaining weight. It's just that feedings are so unpleasant all the time.

@Meridian: oh my gosh, I saw 7 and was like that is a ton!
@Pumpkin Pie: yeah, she's happy and gaining weight too but started to refuse to nurse or take a bottle. Had to start feeding her when she was half asleep all the time just to get by.

I think my LO is the only weirdo who didn't mind the Zantac. He made a "yuck" face but took it pretty easily after the first few doses. We did the happy/smiles/clapping thing @thismustbetheplace: mentioned so maybe that helped? We are also very picky about the syringe we use (lol) - we have a ton of extras now, but there are some that kind of "stick" more and are harder to give a little at a time using. Even ones from Target that should be all the same definitely work differently, so maybe try requesting a few from your pharmacy and see if that makes a difference? I will say that my husband is much better about giving the medicine than I am, so maybe you could see if it's easier if your DH gives the Zantac to her?
Zantac ended up not helping his reflux (our primary issue was refusing to eat except when he was really sleepy - no issues with weight gain or spitting up) so he's now on Prilosec. It's strawberry flavored and he doesn't seem to mind that one either. He's been doing really well on the Prilosec although we've had to up the dosage a few times.
